There seems to be a growing contingent of fans who are ready to move on from KAM, KOC, or both, and I am baffled as to why. Last night Drew Bunting and I had a great talk about this on our latest episode of Vikings Report, which is coming out Friday, but I want to talk about some of it now.
The issue most folks seem to have at the moment is not addressing the offensive line, and his initial draft class, which flat out sucks right now. You'll get no argument from me there. But let's go a little deeper to see what awaited him when he took the helm.
From 2016-21 Rick had 65 draft picks. SIXTY FIVE!!! Arguably, six worked out--Cook, Bradbury, O'Neill, Mattison, JJ, and Darrisaw. We can debate whether Bradbury worked out or didn't, maybe add in Cam Bynum, but the point remains 5-6 out of 65 is terrible, bordering on incompetent. The inability to replenish the roster with draft picks forced him to re-sign or extend guys he should've released in an effort to remain competitive, like Rudolph, Griffen, Kendricks, Barr, Thielen, etc.
Those bad contracts and/or extensions lead to a a metric assload of dead money that was eventually coming due, but Rick had been in the chair forever so he thought he could just kick the can down the road indefinitely. Eventually, though, the bill comes due, and the Vikes are now dealing with those ramifications. That dead money and those contracts limited the ability for KAM to improve the roster in every area, but to say he ignored the lines isn't 100% accurate. And in 10 years Rick was the GM, his attempts to improve the o-line were mostly miserable failures, but I digress.
Kwesi has addressed the lines, it just hasn't worked. He re-signed Bradbury, drafted Ingram, and just signed Risner on the OL. On defense he's kept Hunter, signed Phillips and Lowry, and drafted Roy on defense. Other than Hunter, those have been stopgap measures. There hasn't been enough cap space to go get even an above average G or C in free agency, and Ingram is close to becoming a bust. On defense, Lowry is just bad...it is what it is.
The Wilf's are patient, and they are gonna give KAM and KOC the full 4 yrs on their contract. Be patient. It's not something that gets fixed in one or even two drafts or FA classes, especially when the Vikes had the cap situation when KAM took over. Kwesi's done a hell of a job on cleaning up the cap mess, and '24 and '25 are key. I think they always have been, from the day they got hired. But a surprising 13-4 season last year amped up expectations.
To go one step further, we wouldn't even be talking about what to do with Kirk Cousins if Rick had gotten a franchise QB, and THAT goes all the way back to May of 2006, when he was hired to be one of the corners in the ill-fated Triangle of Authority. From the 2007 draft until 2021...15 YEARS if you're keeping score at home...he swung at franchise QB's only twice--Ponder and Teddy. Both missed, badly, either due to skill or injury. (Tarvaris was drafted by Chilly before Rick got hired in 2006).
ALL of this today is due, in some form, to Spielman incompetence, except the '22 draft. And that draft stinks, no denying that, but people who miss Rick and want him back (I've seen those sentiments on Twitter) are quick to forget how horrid his last six years at the helm were, for the most part. Those failures directly lead to the roster/cap mess the Vikes are in today.
