Who was it who decided to not only hold on to Rudy, but give him a massive extension?
I still don't understand giving up a 2nd for a TE and then turn around and overpay the guy he was drafted to replace
They drafted Smith in 2019 to be a 2nd starting TE (TE1B?) since they were going to run a 2 TE offense under Kubiak. That made sense, they didn't have any depth at the position beyond Conklin, a 5th round pick who'd done very little as a rookie in 2018.
They extended Rudolph in 2019, which again was a reasonable choice. If they forced Rudolph to play out the last year of his deal, there'd be a risk they had nothing at the position going into 2020. Rudolph's extension was a bit of an overpay but structured to be flexible for the team to get out from it in a year or two, which was a fair tradeoff.
The problem was keeping Rudolph in 2020. Irv played pretty well in stretches as a rookie in 2019, and Conklin looked good in his 2nd preseason plus held up well on a higher snap count during the regular season in his 2nd year. I thought it was obvious at that point that Smith was going to be a good starter and Conklin was a decent TE2. They could've moved on from Rudolph and saved cap space in 2020 and beyond. I think Irv would've done just as well or better as the TE1 that year (he was much more productive in his 4 starts than Rudolph was the rest of the year).
So that was a bad mistake. Spielman completely botched the roster construction in 2020 and retaining Rudolph was one of the main reasons for that.
