Other factors that don't seem to be impacting other guys on the line as much as him. It is a very small sample size, but he is failing to dominate tackles who will be significantly worse than the majority of tackles he will face in the regular season, even if you include the holding call he forced is that is only 3 pressures.
3 pressures on 24 pass rush snaps is good. It would be 4 on 25 if the sack hadn’t been ruled off for an illegal contact flag.
He doesn’t have to dominate, he just has to play well against NFL caliber opposition. And he’s been doing that.
Meanwhile Patrick Jones on the other side has 3 times the pressures in only 7 more pass rush snaps. Is he just more lucky than Wonnum?
Speaking of Jones, according to PFF Jones isn't actually playing well while getting those pressures so are the grades wrong for him, but correct for Wonnum? Or correct for Wonnum and Jones hasn't actually played well this preseason?
Several of Jones’ pressures have been schemed up on stunts, which don’t require him to win as a pass rusher. One of his hurries was actually a bad play, as he lost contain and Stidham scrambled past him for the TD. He does have a couple of nice wins around the edge but I’d say he’s been about average as a pass rusher overall. So his average grades are fair IMO.
I’m not like a DJ Wonnum fanboy who’s trying to make him look good. I was very unhappy with him early last year, and skeptical of the pick in the first place:
But he’s evidently improved and is playing better this preseason than he did the last 2 years. I might have to eat my words and admit he’s turned into a solid starter-quality edge rusher.
