So let's look at the Vikings PPD since Cousins has been here. Since that is the critical complaint about him by some. I took the Vikings PPD from 2018 and compared it to the last 25 Super Bowl winners. The same set of numbers, one sorted by offensive PPD and the other by the difference in offensive PPD and Defensive PPD. Can you pick out Cousin's numbers? But I'm sure I'm missing some context here.
But, but Raptor, NFL scores are increasing. Sure they are. In small increments. See, that part of the missing context is that scores in the NFL are increasing and that's why Cousins didn't do it. What's not mentioned is the Defensive PPD on the road to the Super Bowl and how important that is. Turns out it is very important. See if you average the difference between OPPD and DPPD, for Super Bowl winners that comes out to .52 ppd. Only 1 team has ever won in the last 25 years with a negative difference. The Giants. 1.90 on off, and 1.92 on def. Cousins' best chance was 2019. But they didn't make it. It was his only chance really. If you look at that list, only 2 Super Bowl winners ever had a dppd over 2.0. But what no one will explain is this. While the NFL scores are increasing slowly, well......4 of Cousins's full years his oppd drive was higher than the Mahomes/Chiefs last year. So, was he scoring enough to win? Most likely, if he had a defense. Not chance in hell without a defense.
This isn't a defense of Cousins as much as it's a defense of why the Vikings didn't win the Super Bowl. Because they didn't have the defense to do it, not because they didn't have the offense. So you can blame Cousins all you want. I'll blame the coaches for not putting up a good defense.
But Cousins had his one year. One year isn't always enough. Sometimes you can have a good team for multiple years and just not make it. Take Buffalo for example. Brady had this for pretty much his entire time in New England.
But I'm sure I'm missing some context there as well. Can you win the Super Bowl with one good year? Yes. You can also not win it with multiple good years. But it's damn near impossible to do without a defense. It doesn't matter who the QB is.
But I'm sure I'm missing context, and,
I'm a broken record.
