The Running Back position seems to lack a plan to me. For 2024 the Vikes have:
RB1 Aaron Jones
RB2 Ty Chandler
Others:
Kene Nwangwu
DeWayne McBride
Myles Gaskin
I was quite surprised they didn't make a late round pick at the position and didn't sign an UDFA RB or two to try and find someone that can groom for a year and maybe get some PT next year. There isn't a limit on how many UDFAs you can sign, I guess we can interpret this to mean they don't believe in any UDFA's out there still available.
What is the future of the position? AJ is on a one year contract and is nearing retirement. Ty has done alright in his time in the role but nothing that makes me think he is who we should be putting all our chips on. I just don't see any long term plan here. Spending on a FA retread doesn't sound great option. We only have three draft picks next year, is the plan to take one in next year's draft and play him immediately? As of right now we only have a first round pick and two fifth round picks next year. I doubt we'd use a RD1 pick on a RB with as many bigger needs there are, so I'm guessing its draft an RB in round 5 next year and play him asap? Seems risky. I suppose we will likely get a 3rd rd comp pick next year that could be used on a RB, maybe that makes the most sense.
