What is the plan at RB?

The Chiefs found Pacheco in the 7th. There will be FAs. This is literally the most disposable position in football.

My own thought about the RB position is not that they desperately need to find someone, but curiosity regarding the team's approach. It looks like a thin RB room, especially if Nwangwu is not trusted to contribute. They just have McBride and Myles Gaskin on the roster, though maybe with Ham they only plan to carry 3 or 4 RBs. They probably think McBride has potential.

Considering KOC's reported interest in Jahmyr Gibbs in 2023, I think he would love to get another RB if he can find one that's dynamic and a great receiving threat - but probably doesn't care much otherwise.

I am more worried with the O line. Need 2 guards and a center!! Good thing we have some money next year.

Yes.  But have you seen how much quality IOLs have been signing for lately?  Ouch.  This huge amount of money to spend next year that many perceive the Vikings to have might not go as far as people think.  

The myth that it is really easy to find a good RB and that you can just spend a late round pick to get one, is just that, a myth.

Since 2000 there have been 62 RBs drafted in the first 3 rounds who have had multiple 1K seasons, only 14 drafted in the 4th round or later.

There have only been 26 RBs who have had a single or more 1K season drafted after the 3rd round, 99 drafted prior the 4th. Only 14 undrafted RBs have hit 1K yards since 2000, which 12 fewer than undrafted WRs to hit 1K.

Looking around the league, only 12 RBs managed to break 1K yards this year despite having an extra game to hit that mark, only 20 managed to break 900. There are fewer "good" RBs than there are teams.

It is hard to find a good RB, harder than finding a good WR in some ways.

But wait - I've been hearing a lot of people saying that KAM trading away multiple picks to get just a few players doesn't matter because we will fill out the team through free agency! Are you suggesting that maybe a good team needs to be built through strong drafting in every round and keeping most of your top 100 picks???


Great research to defuse this myth. But I think you are also showing that teams try to get by without having a single back carrying most of the load, so teams are happy if 2 RBs can combine to get +1500 yards. Rather than a 1K season, the measure of success for a RB picked later in the draft might be a 700 yard season.

The Vikings got a bit under 1200 from Mattison and Chandler last year, and that was disappointing. I think they would be happy if Chandler and Jones can combine for at least 1400.

I don't know about that. Are teams happy to trot out two QBs because only 19 managed 3K passing yards this past season? I think there aren't enough good, durable QBs to go around, just like there aren't enough good, durable RBs.


KOC hasn't really split carries between RBs in his time as HC, even when his primary back was really bad (Mattison). It will be interesting to see if Chandler gets more carries this year while Jones is healthy or if he goes back to getting 3 or 4 carries a game like he was getting at the beginning of last season.
