Of course there are outliers like Jamarcus Russell and Manziel who just don’t care and cash checks when they get into the league but a lot of these guys want to do well and win
I don't fully agree with this. QBs still bust at a 50/50 rate and some still do in positive to neutral QB environments. The ones who don't have the passion / grit / massive off-the-field problems are outliers, but I don't believe that the majority of busts would pan out to be anything more than low-end starters inside of good environments.
If you haven't already, check out the main article on the first page of this thread to see what I mean. Several "busts" have been given second shots on teams with much better supporting casts and still failed. Heck, lately we've seen the intriguing example of the Panthers benching Bryce Young just for Andy Dalton to play at a fairly high level despite having the same horrid offense and coaching that Young has had (Josh Rosen vs Ryan Fitzpatrick in Miami is similar).
Perhaps the likes of Geno and Darnold are the beginning of a new trend of bust-to-decent starters. My eyes are peeled on the 2021 NFL Draft with its 4 1st round QB busts 0 will Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields (already getting benched by his new team), or Mac Jones turn things around on the next chance they get? What about Kenny Pickett? If it is true that so much is reliant on the QB's environment, then we should see at least one or two of these names become quality starters somewhere soon.
