Dobbs and Mullens not being good enough to execute ANY gameplan so how could O'Connell possibly have adjusted his gameplans is pure bullsh*t Strawman Argument homerism.
If Mullens is so bad why did he start so many games for Kyle Shanahan? Seriously. If he's so bad you can't gameplan to minimize his weaknesses and optimize his strengths then why did he get so many starts for the best Offensive Playcaller of this generation? Kyle couldn't find anyone else anywhere?
Why did Dobbs start so many games for the Cardinals this year? There were no other options available?
The answer js is clear, they both have enough skills to be backup QBs that start when called upon. But you have to actually adapt your gameplans to optimize them. Something Kevin William O'Connell is utterly unwilling to do.
Why haven’t any of them had success though, even with a coach like shannahan? That’s the actual point it’s not about them being bad for backups. It’s that even great coaches don’t have much success with them.
This offense is middle of the pack scoring still this year with all the injuries/turnovers and better in terms of moving the ball and sustaining drives. If you look at like Cleveland on the year they have been bottom of the league for much of it before Flacco, the defense needs to carry a backup qb.
It’s not that they suck for backups, that’s just why backups are backups and often don’t have much success in the nfl. Even with a coach like shannahan. We are 3-5 with backup QBs and a meh defense. They are 9-29 outside Minnesota. The point is this is about what should have been expected from the start.
One of the criticisms of Zimmer and now KOC was the inability of this team as a whole to adjust quickly and counter how opponents were attacking us on either side of the ball. It's a similar concept going into a game. You have a set of tools. You have to have a plan to use the tools. That's what makes Bellicheck one of the GOATs as a coach. He maximizes his talent on the field and does his best not to expose their weaknesses. He can't draft worth crap anymore and probably shouldn't be a GM, and at this point time may have gotten the best of him, but rarely was he out coached.
Yes, Dobbs and Mullens are backups. If "competitive" was the goal, then you have to take a much closer look at KOC, because he did not put them in the best position to succeed... and we lost a lot of close games when the defense was bailing this team out right and left and KOC was doing the same thing over and over again that our backup QB was REALLY BAD AT expecting different results while not doing the things that our backup QB was better at. I'm not saying we'd be hoisting a Lombardi, but we'd probably have a couple more wins right now.
