I'd probably defer more to FSUVike since he's written a whole lot more on this. I'm not a scout. What Dobbs wasn't was a pocket passer, and I think you and I both agree there. He was slow to make reads and got himself in trouble when he tried to be one. His accuracy was bad the longer the throw, and on more than one occasion he nearly got our receiver killed. So for one, keep the throws shorter more often than not because that's what he was.
What Dobbs did well was improvise, scramble, buy time, and get the occasional first down with his legs. Most receivers can get open when they have time to do it, because at that point the routes break down and it's backyard ball for lack of a better term. Heck, a lot of non-NFL caliber receivers can do it in that setting. That's how Hock or someone else is wide open for a big gain because Dobbs is evading pressure to buy time and someone literally lost his guy and there was no one around to pick up the assignment due to the field being spread apart. But you're going to have to let him do that when things break down. That's literally how we beat NO and ATL was plays breaking down due to Dobb's moving around and eventually finding some guy that the defense just lost, and with the weapons we have on offense, that can work. More importantly, you're going to have to move to a short passing game with some consistency. Go with high percentage plays that can get you 5-10 yards especially to guys that can break a tackle and mix in some occasional RPO concepts to keep the defenses honest and have a spy on your QB at all times. It keeps them a man down. And for the love all things purple, figure out a way to run the effing ball whether it's with Dobbs or without.
You can still do the occasional 5 step drops, but that can't be the bread and butter because it's not something Dobbs could do well consistently, but when that was all that KOC was calling, the defenses would feast on it... The line couldn't protect him, and KOC wouldn't call a blitz beater to save his life. But those longer passes would work a lot better when it's not the only thing being called.
One thing Flores has figured out well is that being unpredictable is really hard to combat. KOC could stand to learn a thing or two about that.
It's funny though that with the book being out on Dobbs for years that NO and ATL had no answer for him, why do you think that was? I mean the guy has played for how many teams now? It's not like there was no tape on him and these two teams had nothing to work with. It was the same Dobbs here as it was in AZ literally all season long. Yet they had no answer for him. But defenses had plenty of answers when he was fit into Kevin's offense. That Dobbs was pretty easy to beat. He didn't have the skills to run it.
