We had many speculations and predictions prior to the season. Some of us predicted 3-5 wins. Others predicted double digit wins. The jury is in. Minus any talk about Kirk, this is what we learned.
1. The Vikes really have no depth at QB. Josh and Pick Mullens are awful, just brutal. Jury still out on Hall but he's not trending upward.
2. The Vikes cannot threaten a defense from the RB position. Mattison is awful. Chandler is slightly better than awful. Nwangwu is taking up a roster spot. Why tie up a roster spot on a guy who is there to watch kickoffs sail over his head? Even if healthy, Akers isn't good enough to give DCs reason to adjust his way. This is a BIG problem in MN.
3. The O-line has promise. They played really well at times and had some top-tier stretches. They collapsed against GB. Darrisaw looked like he didn't want to be there. Risner was eventually a solid pick up. Ingram held his own. In fact, he may have been an asset on the line this year as opposed to his usual liability status. The O-line was a W for MN this year and that's rare.
4. Addison played well. I'm not sure he was worth the first round pick. Not sure he ever will be due to the fact he's so small. I just don't know if he can be a #1 WR. He met expectations.
5. No depth at TE. Mundt and Oliver are bottom tier guys. Is Oliver really that slow? Unless the ball hits Mundt in the chest, he's dropping it. These two guys piss me off!
6. The D-line CANNOT dent a pocket, not even a weak one. Phillips may be salvageable as a back up but come on.....did anyone really think the Vikes were going to push the pocket with Phillips, Lowry and Tonga? I posted about this before the season started. This is a dark, deep problem in MN. If the Vikes are going to stay with a 3-4, they need 3 brand new DLs. I promise everyone reading this post, no team that has to start a Lowry, Bullard, Tonga or a Phillips will win a game in the post season.
7. Unless the Vikes bring 6-7 dudes, they get no heat on the passer. Teams with good to even decent O-lines, like GB and DET, welcome the pressure because they can pick it up and expose the man coverage and holes in the zones left by the vacated rushers. Both GB and DET can threated from the RB position. That just makes it uglier.
8. Asamoah is now, officially, a wasted pick. If Pace is better than Asamoah, he isn't much better. Pace was a nice "what if" story before the season started but he AINT much. Hicks is a below avg inside LB as well and he was the best we had. Hunter is the only LB who is really ready to play and contribute at a playoff level. This LB corps is a disaster.
9. Cine is officially, a wasted pick. Nice first pick Kwesi, ya j-off!
10. We have no corners and no safeties who can play at a high level. All of them are average to below avg performers. Harry hasn't done a damn thing the last two years. He has to go. Blackmon may emerge as a decent CB at some point but he was a joke last night. Evans and Murphy are what they are, avg when they are at their best.
11. We have a good punter; I'd say he's elite.
12. Joseph is a d-bag but considering all the other holes on this roster, he's not a huge concern.
13. KOC is not a HC. He just isn't. The "rah-rah, pat ya on the back" stuff may be a welcomed contrast to Zim but it manifests itself on the field eventually. The Vikes have no attitude anywhere. No gangsters. No downhill killers. No guys who will punch first and worry about the police later. This is a soft, polite, even cordial team. It is a reflection of the HC.
I think I predicted 5 Ws for this season. I knew they'd suck.
Final Verdict: Guilty of Sucking.
Sentence: Three to four years in the NFL cellar while some responsible GM comes in and fixes this disaster.
