Cheap for cousins is 25 mil. If we do that we either are hurting our future or not keeping Hunter. As you get at the qb market makes little sense in that “average to good” area with contracts being given out. I just think at this point it makes way more sense to get the cap right, draft qb of the future with a truly cheap bridge and set ourselves up for 2025 and beyond.
I'm in agreement with our post, with maybe the exception of this...
We've got quite a bit of cap space available next season. I thought I saw that we were middle of the road. And 25 mill for Cousins, which I admit is a bit more than I'd like to pay does move about 2/3s (I believe) of his 28M dead cap to 2025 freeing up more 2024 money. It's not my first choice, but it does have an advantage over signing any other QB. I'm against VOID years with the exception of contending now, so I haven't been completely keen on that strategy, but Kwesi has been doing a good job of shedding most of this and freeing up cap space to the point that we should be completely out of Rick's mess by the end of next season while maintaining competitiveness... which was his stated goal. This obviously depends on when Cousins signs since that cap accelerates when his contract voids, but he can also extend that timeframe if they are negotiating (which I believe one player did last year before still becoming a free agent as it really doesn't hurt the player to push it a few weeks).
I'm also not sure if resigning Hunter also pushes Hunter's dead cap money, since I know a chunk of that dead cap is his... but those are some things to consider. We're actually in good position to make some moves this offseason AND retain Hunter because he has dead cap. That cap money can get prorated across the new contract. Kwesi has done a pretty good job there.
My point is this... Cousins as a bridge and Hunter returning doesn't mean we cannot go out and get help for the defense. Now neither player may be interested. That's a different issue obviously. Then all that cap does accelerate and we have what we're projected to have, but the beauty of bringing either of them back is that we can pro-rate some of it while taking the complete hit for Smith and then take the remaining hit for Cousins in 25 and spread Hunter's out over his new deal. That leaves a lot of space to get a top FA at DL and CB at the very least and for KAM to do the bargain shopping he does so well.
