More than one thing can be true at the same time.
As the Head Coach of the Minnesota Vikings he's been phenomenal in his Rookie season. A complete reversal of a 'fear-based' culture (according to the Players themselves). But it's more than that. Kirk Cousins infamously said after he didn't give JJ a chance at a record last year that he 'goes where the read takes me.'
That's the mindset of a guy who won't riskit for the biscuit. A Game Manager. A guy who didn't have the mindset to ruthlessly target Cooper Kupp over and over again despite double coverage on a drive to win the Superbowl.
Kevin O'Connell has coached Cousins to target JJ. No matter what. He's literally deprogrammed years of what Mike Zimmer wanted Kirk to do. Unleashed the inner Gunslinger who will hang in the pocket forever to deliver the ball to the right guy. Which entails interceptions and sacks.
This Team is nails when the game is on the line halfway through the 4th Quarter. Nails. The Defense has found ways to make plays. The entire Offense has found ways to step up. Be it running, blocking, making contested catches, not committing penalties.
It's literally a Sea Change.
But this clearly should be a Top 5 Scoring Offense. They have the best weapon in football. A Top 8 QB. A variety of complimentary weapons. And they utterly disappear for halves at a time and have been MIA in 4 games.
The Offense is too predictable. The IZB scheme doesn't fit the talent. And instead of adjusting, Kevin has stuck with his scheme and instead just decided to use the running game as window dressing.
He's terrible at dialing up successful plays in 3rd/4th and 3 or less to go. Terrible. It's all 'surprise the Defense by going Shotgun with no threat at all of a run and chucking it 10+ yards down the field.'
That's just bad playcalling. Period.
He runs guys in motion but uses almost no East/West plays to help his IOL and his running game. He doesn't use many two TE sets, jumbo sets or max protect.
Kevin talked all offseason about the illusion of complexity out of the same looks. If I'm a DC I have 16 games of tape that tell me the Emperor has No Clothes. There's no illusion here. They're going to chuck the ball 10+ yards down the field. I have zero fear of the running game since you don't have any extra guys in to block. You're not going to stretch me horizontally.
All a DC has to do is get to Cousins enough times. He's not going to roll out on design boots and waggles. He's going to be right there in the pocket looking to push the ball vertically to JJ. Or Hock. And KJ, especially when they're getting blown out. Sometimes Thielen, who can't beat coverage any more.
It works because of JJ and Cousins. That's a pretty damn decent floor to have for an Offense. The ceiling? It's low. Too much on the shoulders of two few.
And don't get me started on bad in-game adjustments. Blitzes coming left and right should lead to quick hitters to hot reads. Only runs IZB up the gut. Seems to have memory issues regarding how well Cook has run off Left Tackle.
He's smart. But also young. Sometimes it takes a minute to realize your sh*t does in fact stink. He'll figure out how to balance the Offense. With help from Kwesi. And the Players who clearly adore him. Or he won't. Which means we've already witnessed his ceiling as a Head Coach.
I really feel like it's the scheme more than it's cook. And they better take a hard look at what they're gonna do next year because it doesn't maximize the RB's you're using or the strengths of the oline.
And check out how often the Packers were in dime on sunday. I want to say it was about half the passing downs. Why? Because they easily stopped the run with 6 guys and they negated JJ with a safety while allowed them to put a corner on Hock. Two of the most successful plays in that game were when Kirk took off and ran. I hope they noticed that. Middle of the field was wide open on several occasions.
As far as the D, I am most disappointed with the way they've rushed the QB this year. There's no getting around the fact that the secondary lacks talent but avg ability at slot corner and safety would be making a big difference. It's looks afraid.
I enjoyed both of your guys posts. So many good points by both authors,
