To paraphrase Bud Grant, "Never hire your friends. Hire the best coaches you can, and learn what you can from them." This was repeated by Chuck Foreman just this week on KFAN.
My point is, Zimmer doesn't know how to go outside his circle of friends to identify good coaches. That was cited by several of the teams that declined him for all the HC jobs he applied for: he couldn't explain how he would build an offensive staff. So until we have a more insightful coach, his old friends and their friends or kids might be the best option Zimmer will pick.
This is the definition of confirmation bias.
Keeping old Frazier hires on is the exact opposite of hiring "old friends".
Norv is the only one that sort of fits the narrative, as he and Zim had coached together on Dallas 20 years before. Then again, they notoriously did not get along while with the Vikings, which leads me to believe they were more like old colleagues who didn't have to interact with each other much back in the day.
There is no link between Zim and Shurmur as old friends, and the idea that he was a "Spielman hire" in preparation for the Sam Bradford trade is non-sensical, considering Bradford was a desperation move 1 week before the season when Teddy's knee blew up. There was no plan to add Bradford when Shurmur was hired, if anything, it was Shurmur's presence that influenced our pursuit of Bradford.
Defillipo was the definition of what everyone around here clamours for... hiring the "best" coach available. He was the hot name in the off season, getting considered for multiple HC positions. He was the "qualified" guy and And hiring him was an unmitigated disaster.
Stefanski was not an old friend, at least you admitted as much.
And finally Zim and Kubiak had no prior relationship before his hire here. They both said as much when he was brought in, they hadn't worked together and they didn't know each other beyond the superficial relationship two coaches would have being in the league for so many years at the same time. It was a mutual respect thing, the idea that they were old buddies isn't true.
