The OC Kellen Mond Needs is NOT Klint Kubiak
Where's the damn experience coming from--Dad?
Mike Greitzer @ Vikings61.com
So Dad is the great co-creator of the NFL “zone-run offense ” with former Denver Bronco coach, Mike Shanahan. Son Klint has no experience in running a pro offense in this league. How does that help rookie QB Kellen Mond become the future signal-caller of the Minnesota Vikings?
Kubiak (is) the third OC in Eagan in as many seasons, and sixth overall for head coach Mike Zimmer’s tenure as head man in Minnesota. Before Gary Kubiak (let’s just call him ‘Dad’) came to become the architect of the Vikings new zone-run offensive scheme in 2019, we had the “new guy” John DeFilippo and then “new guy” Kevin Stefanski, another young–and seemingly precocious–mind that came from the QB Coach ranks.
“Klint, he’s a lot like how Kevin [Stefanski] was when he was there. He’s very detailed. He brings up the subject that they [players and coaches] want to discuss. He’ll have his opinions. He’ll listen to the other guys’ opinions in the room and then kind of go from there.” Mike Zimmer, Star Tribune, 2021
Yeah, sure, Klint Kubiak is a “QB Coach”. Head on over to your favorite Pro Football resource page for player or coach history to find out more about Klint Kubiak! There should find out about Klint’s rich experience in grooming pro quarterbacks and NFL offenses! Like…uh, Kirk Cousins? The guy who has been paid like a sultan and has taken the Vikings to one Wildcard playoff berth in three seasons? The guy that the Minnesota front office just drafted Kellen Mond to replace? Well, this is what we found–
If you do find something about young Klint, it’ll be directly tied to Dad. It’ll most likely be on Wikipedia, that bountiful source of generic and pliable information for all high school research papers. You won’t find how Klint groomed a stable of young guns for NFL action in his colorful football history, nor how his input made all the difference in the Viking offense under Dad in two seasons.
“He’s [Klint Kubiak] done a good job. Everybody’s going to wonder what it’s going to be like when you’re a first-time play-caller, but at the end of the day every one of us was always a first-time play-caller at one point. Mike Zimmer, Star Tribune, 2021
Kellen Mond Needs Tutelage–Not A Buddy’s Son
Looking at Kellen Mond in college is (to me) a lot like looking at Colin Kapernick as a San Francisco 49er. His form was far from perfect, but his playmaking ability was superb. Without Jim Harbaugh ( an NFL QB for 14 years), Kapernick wouldn’t have been anywhere near the Super Bowl he made–and almost won–in 2012.
Kellen Mond has a million things to learn about the NFL and playing in the NFL. About reading defenses and putting the ball where it needs to be. About accuracy and fixing an awkward throwing motion. About knowing when to run and when not to run. Add a big, fat ETC. here. Is he going to learn about all this by listening to a guy who was the Vikings “quality control assistant” in 2013-2014 when the team was 12-19, then followed Dad wherever he was hired?
Or maybe he’ll glean all he needs to know on this next level by Zimmer himself, the grand defensive mind that seems to think he knows all he needs to know with his sixth OC hire. The guy who thinks Rick Dennison, the Vikings offensive line coach since 2019–and another buddy–is just fine at his position. The guy who thought Case Keenum was a liability on a team that went 13-3 in 2017.
Let’s take a projected look at 2022. If the Vikings take a step back on offense, will Zimmer fire his friend’s eldest son from the office he shouldn’t have in the first place? Negative. And will Kellen Mond be ready to lead a team after one season backing up a player (Kirk Cousins) that doesn’t mirror his style at all–and an OC that hasn’t improved Cousins’ game after being his QB coach for two seasons?
Friends, that’s a rhetorical question from this end.
