Thursday Special....let's do this! The draft proceeds pretty much as you'd expect - the QBs are all gone by pick 6 except for Love. At 7 the Panthers unexpectedly take CJ Henderson which opens the door for the Jaguars to take Derrick Brown. The offensive tackles and wide receivers dominate the next 10 picks and, as you might expect, this shuffles the draft considerably leading to the Vikings having an option at 22 they can only dream of:
22: DT Javon Kinlaw - This guy reminds me of Gerald McCoy or Fletcher Cox. He's an animal. The Vikings are ecstatic with this option.
25: The Patriots pass on Jordan Love and instead add a DL in Yetur Gross-Matos. At this point, the Vikings know their best option is to deal back. Their pick, 25, is worth 230 points. They deal 25, 105, and 253 to the Dolphins for picks 39 and 56. That is a point total of 262 for 251. Alas, an edge for the Dolphins, but having three more picks before the end of the second round is too tempting.
39: They watch possible targets like Josh Jones, Cesar Ruiz, and Trevon Diggs go before the end of Round 1. Round 2 sees players like Jonathan Taylor, Neville Gallimore, and a couple WRs go off the board. There are still an array of CBs, Russ Blacklock, AJ Epenesa, and others on the board. Enough depth that Rick Spielman does the unthinkable...he makes the fans wait again! Out: Picks 39, 89, 201 (203 points) to Atlanta for picks 47, 78, and 143 (196),
47: The gamble pays off, none of their primary targets are off the board and the Vikings choose OT Lucas Niang with the pick.
56: OG Jonah Jackson - big, athletic as hell, got some nasty to him. I think he's being criminally underrated as a player this year and he is an ideal fit in a zone scheme. With the Vikings' favorite CBs all off the board they take another much needed lineman.
58: CB Damon Arnette - Dan has talked about him, I've talked about him. He has warts, but he's a good fit here in MN.
78: A run on positions the team covets is unfortunate but it happens. So when the Vikings come to the board at 78 they decide to see if they have themselves another Danielle Hunter to mold: DE Darryl Taylor from Tennessee. He's a sick athlete who just tries to rely on nothing more to win battles. Well, Andre Patterson will take this lump of Clay and hand him the weapons to terrorize.
132: The Vikings had to wait awhile but no one slipped worth being aggressive for. They take WR Tyler Johnson.
143: WR Devin Duvarnay - A guy this muscular, with an attitude like a wedge buster, shouldn't be this fast! He's raw, but man there is a lot to like.
155: CB Harrison Hand - Physical, smart, and athletic. He might need some work on his man coverage skills, but you'll never be disappointed with his feisty play.
205 - S Shyheim Carter - not much to say here, the team needs young safety depth
249 CB Lavert Hill - Same, CB depth.
QB - Cousins, Mannion, Browning
RB - Cook, Mattison, Boone, Abdullah
FB - Ham
OT - Niang, O'Neill, Hill, Udoh
OG - Reiff, Jackson, Elflein, Samia
C - Bradbury, Jones
WR - Thielen, Sharpe, Johnson, Duvernay, Johnson, Beebe, Hollins
TE - Rudolph, Smith Jr., Conklin
DE - Hunter, Odenigbo, Taylor, Zettel
DT - Pierce, Kinlaw, Stephen, Johnson, Holmes, Watts, Mata'afa
LB - Kendricks, Barr, Gedeon, Wilson, Smith
CB - Hughes, Arnette, Hill, Boyd, Hand, Fields
S - Smith, Harris, Carter
K - Bailey
P - Colquitt
Good read. I am one who is not high on Kinlaw at all. But thats just me.
You know I love the Niang pick and also high on Jonah Jackson with zone system.
Arnette is boom or bust
Good work as always
