Sunday Edition: Today I'll try and list who is still on the board. What has happened the previous picks and discuss more strategy!
In today's hypothetical we are going to lean into the idea that Harris gets an extension and stays with the team. The Vikings also deal pick 89 to the Redskins for Trent Williams. So the team loses pick 89 but the need for an early OL is also reduced now. Reiff will be cut to make the contracts work.
Here we go: Things go as expected at the top of the draft and all the QBs are gone by pick 7. Kinlaw goes early at pick 9 and McKinney right behind him. A WR run starts at pick 11 that benefits the Vikes. Becton, Whirfs, and Wills are not far behind. Gladney, Delpit, and Fullerton are soon to follow. The Vikings come to the clock at pick 22 with the top five as:
OT Thomas, RB Swift, QB Love, WR Mims, and LB Murray. Their best options are likely to be available later. Spielman takes advantage with a trade:
Pick 22 and 205 for Picks 29 and 93.
Pick 25: DE Yetur Gross-Matos. A great fit to play RE for this team.
Pick 29: OT Andrew Thomas is still on the board and since he isn't a fit for the Vikings, the Bengals move up to protect Burrow's blind side:
Trade: Pick 29, 93, and 155 for picks 33 and 65.
Pick 33: CB Trevon Diggs. The Vikings get their CB to revamp the secondary. The Vikings could consider LB Queen, CB Igbinoghene, DTs Blacklock or Galville, but they go with their corner need.
Pick 58: WR Tee Higgins. The Vikings land a steal here. Higgins is big, he wins contested catches, and he creates separation with precision.
When they selected, OT Niang went a pick before them and DT Madubuike was available as well as CB Arnette and WR Hamler. In the end....they can't pass on this talent and with a pick just 7 choices away they gamble that a need will be there at 65.
Pick 65: CB Damon Arnette The Vikings add another young CB to their mix. They know they have elite safety play to fall back on so they arm themselves with physical, gifted CBs that can hopefully step in day one. Also on the board: DTs Raekwon Davis and Davon Hamilton, CB Cam Dantzler, OL Prince Tega Wanogho, and QB Jalen Hurts.
Pick 105: OL Ben Bartch. There is so much to like about how he fits the Kubiak scheme. They can start him at LG right away or take some time to coach him up until the need arrives like they did with O'Neill. There will likely be growing pains, but the choice will pay dividends.
OL Biasdasz and CB Ojemudia are available, but this is the choice for the Vikings.
Pick 132: WR Tyler Johnson. Another pro-ready stud. I've already told you how much I like Johnson. There isn't anyone else to consider here.
Pick 201: CB Lavert Hill. Solid corner for Zimmer to work with.
Pick 219 LB Francis Bernard A solid, instinct driven LB for depth and special teams.
Pick 249 - S Jalen Elliot Depth
Pick 253 - DE/OLB Carter Coughlin Let's see what Patterson and the weight room can do!
QB - Cousins, Mannion, Browning
RB - Cook, Mattison, Boone, Abdullah
FB - Ham
OG - Bartch, Elflein, Samia
C - Bradbury, Jones
WR - Thielen, Sharpe, Higgins, Johnson, Johnson, Beebe, Hollins
