Yeah, we're going to the playoffs most likely. No I don't see us making it out of the wild card round, and even if we do definitely not the divisional round... So for 2020...

Cap situation sucks. We don't have a lot of it. KC has one more year at 28M guaranteed. The defense went from elite in 2017 to pretty much trash at this point. They need a QB of the future, a DT or 2 since Joseph is going to age at some point and none of the internal options have stepped up to even take Steven's spot. So what do you do?

I'd like to steer this away from coaching. I'll simply note that I'm not convinced Zimmer/Spielman are the right guys for the job, but I'm not convinced they are the wrong guys either... particularly Rick who does seem to be able to find talent late in the draft. But, that's not the discussion here.

We have two options as I see it. You can extend Cousins and lower his cap number. I'd only be interested in that if he's taking a pretty massive pay cut beyond 2020 with mostly non-guaranteed seasons. That would allow them to go out and get some help at DT or corner and limit the need to find a QB of the future for now.

Or

You sell out everything for picks, draft a QB high since there are a few in this class and run a light tank in 2020 and possibly again in 2021.

So why won't they have much cap Room next year? I think there are some big contracts on defense that will be gone and can be replaced by younger FA and or draft picks. Linval is gone, XR has to be gone, Griffen needs to be gone, they may or may not resign Waynes, even Harrison is slipping. All those contracts can be out for little or no consequences next year. Defense is so much about attitude and flying around and the core just got old and disinterested, Zim probably has his buddies though so nothing will change.

Rhodes is cuttable, but there's a dead cap hit there. Not sure how much. Reiff is gone I suspect. Griff will be a FA. I still don't see how there's a ton of cap available. If so, great. They would need another DE in that scenario, and I still think they need a DT that can get after the QB.

Last cap projection I saw though said they didn't have much money to spend. I'd like to be wrong there. The plug some holes properly, sure... They need to replace Kirk too, so I'd argue that 1st round pick should be for a QB who can red shirt behind him.. Heck, take Tua if he's there and let him heal up for another season.

We have already sold out. We will have little cap even if we cut guys because we still have to spend to replace and you also have to improve what you cut.

You also have inhouse FA which most of our secondary is. The only set spots are 2 LBs 1 S and 1 DE.

Dead cap and revamping half the D with the same clowns that have underperformed their roles in Spielman and Zimmer already..

No thanks.

2020 rebuild.

yes. Scherff was drafted in 2015 I believe. I think he turned down a 13 per mil extension in September so he may be pricy

I would like to see us find guys who are not necessarily top of the market, but offer some scheme versatility. A dt who can play de and or vice versa. A corner who is bigger and possibly or already plays in the slot and or safety. Same idea with a safety. A linebacker who can rush passer and not as a blitzer. A wr who willing to block de's olbers, pass rushers.
A wr who can return kicks, a running back who line up out wide and or return kicks. Then dump the fat $$$$.

Scherff would be a great addition, but it's unlikely the Vikings will be able to afford him as I imagine a lot of teams will be bidding for him. Peat has been among one of the worst guards in the NFL and is not worth signing (since he's been hurt, former Viking Nick Easton has stepped in and played far better).

Other notable free agent guards: Bills LG Quinton Spain, Panthers LG Greg Van Roten, Lions RG Graham Glasgow, Chargers RG Michael Schofield, Rams RG Austin Blythe, and Redskins LG Ereck Flowers. None of these guys are at the level of Scherff, but would be improvements from Elflein.

I wouldn't move on from RG Josh Kline. He's been decent and he'll have a $6M cap hit next year, which is not bad at all. I would look to replace Elflein, though.

I do think Griffin is gone. I think Linval is a restructure candidate. Rhodes too. So if you save 12 on Griff, 4 on Reiff, 4 on Linval, and 4 on Rhodes you can have about 20M in room. What you do with Waynes, Harris, and Alexander can then be figured out.

Regardless of how you feel about this team's Super Bowl chances, the cap is better situated for 2021 to be the "blow it up" year.

Reiff has been pretty average, so I guess the question there is whether or not he's going to age in that capacity. For me, keeping him depends on what they think of Hill and Udoh. If one of those guys can take over a tackle role and the other shows well enough to be counted on as a backup, I think you save the money and draft a project tackle. That doesn't solve guard though...

I guess people think there's room, so who do they target in FA? With Griff gone, they'll need a DE. They desperately need a DT. One of those could be solved by a high pick, but not both. Too many other needs such as QB and CB.
