This is my fear personally. I want him on the field when he's ready. I don't care if he's better than Darnold now but not ready in that 3-8 scenario. Just take the high pick and when he's shown he has the right fundamentals, give him some reps.
Ready is irrelevant, who even determines what "ready" is. Confident? Understands the playbook? What's your definition of ready because it's a very subjective term and frankly speaking nobody is ever really ready you either play and succeed or you don't. I hate this line of thinking, like you have to baby the guy or he'll fall to pieces. Sack up. Either he's a winner and can succeed like everyone thinks or he sucks and can't handle it. People are just afraid on a subconscious level that he sucks and they don't want to find out right away. So they make this excuse to sit him until he's ready and they (the fan) feel good about it. He's either gonna be good or bad, he isn't gonna change just because you sat him a year
