NBC Sports San Francisco reporter Matt Maiocco spoke very highly of Darnold while speaking on KNBR’s Murph & Mac podcast this week. Maiocco went as far to say that Darnold is the “most talented thrower” that he’s ever seen from the 49ers.

"Sam Darnold might be—can I say this—the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had,” Maiocco said. “Let’s just put him in the very high echelon of guys who can just drop back in the pocket and throw the football. I think that he hasn’t really had any chance to succeed since his college days are over. I think he’s had four head coaches in five years, five offensive coordinators in five years. He’s a talented guy.”

This was quite the astonishing statement from Maiocco, especially when looking back at some of the talented quarterbacks in 49ers history—most notably, Hall of Famers Joe Montana and Steve Young.

Cousins had 3-4 HC’s in 5 years and a new OC in something like 6-7 straight seasons yet was a mid level starter.

The whole “best 49er thrower in history is just silly.

Darnold was lights out in the first half with half the starters. Then the 49ers D couldn't stop Carson Wentz's rushes in the 3rd quarter. Darnold had like 3 possessions in the 2nd half. Ronnie Bell ran horrible routes on one drive that put him in Shanahan's dog house. On the last drive, Darnold had multiple potential game winning throws that were dropped, including a deep one to Conley at the Rams' 30 yd line.

Umm. Because they don’t have good coaches that can recognize and develop talent….

Cousins has had great coaches throughout his career. He also never played with bottom tier OLs and WRs.

Didn't you hear? He played one half of o.k. football in some random unimportant game. Todd Baumann once did that and got half the fan base clamoring for him for a couple years. QB koolaid is potent stuff, it makes grown men believe in fairytales.

49ers coaches have done pretty well developing Purdy. Purdy is talented, he just does not have a strong arm.

I can't believe how upset people get if one doesn't say EVERY player on the Vikings roster is just the "bestest player ever!" lol.

Darnold had a 0.20 EPA/db in 2022 on a horrible Panthers team. That is higher than anything Cousins has achieved. Mayfield on that same Panthers team had a -0.12. (Cousins had a 0.06 that year and we won the conference)

About that game. Wentz was clearly more impressive than Darnold in that game. And they didn’t have “WRs losing the game”. Look at the 49ers last play- the one where Darnold fumbled it away. The OL was great in that game and the rushing attack is what kept them in it.
