Why a Darnold Resurgence is Unlikely - QB Busts

Yep Dan. You got it right. A player can only perform according to what opportunities present themselves. The two QBs that took all kinds of flack during the draft season were Nix who was always cut down due to his low ADoT and McCarthy due to his low volume of passes. Both QBs were running their coaches offenses to perfection. Nix could have thrown a longer ADoT, but he was so successful with the shorter ADoT why should he have. McCarthy was capable of throwing more passes. Trust me his arm would not have fallen off if he had thrown 10 more passes per game. His coach didn't want him to. If either of them refused to play according to their coaches instructions they wouldn't have been playing yet people criticize them for it. 

I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Nix and McCarthy were the best QBs of this class. Both did pretty well in the limited samples of the NFL things they were expected to do, but in general they were not asked to do them. That's my 2 cents though.




Fortunately, Darnold will be here for 2024 only. If he's typical Darnold, he's probably a little bit better than what we saw prior given the talent around him which will win us some games with an improved defense and decent tools on offense. If he steps up, we're going to win a lot of games and he hits the market and scores a nice contract.

Like it or not, this is probably a mediocre year with the hopes that JJM can out produce him starting in 2025 with some proper development. That's fine. Bonus points if happens sooner, but I'm with the others here that we should not rush it because we want to play with our new toy. I'm perfectly fine missing the playoffs this year as long as the team is doing the right things to setup a run for 2025 and beyond.

Don't ignore the college careers they are a very valuable tool to use, but take them in context.

The best college QBs are the ones most likely to be the best pro QBs. I'm not talking about the biggest stats. That's why I said take them in context. Elway and Luck were considered great college QBs and as blue chip as they get. Both ended up being very good to great pro QBs. More recently I saw Joe Burrow as a great college QB. He's on track to be a great pro QB. Once in a while some hidden gems are found. 

You're going to disagree or question every post I make for the sole purpose of disagreeing with me. Did you notice I said most likely and need to be taken in context. Tim Tebow had a very good college career, but taken in context people should have seen that his game was unlikely to transfer well to the pro game. Very few saw Tebow in the Elway, Luck, Burrow can't miss blue chippers mold. Nobody I know of saw Crouch or Frazier as can't miss blue chippers. Maybe you did. I didn't .  
Why don't we play a game. You show me all the bad college QBs who turned out to be good Pros and I'll show you all the good college QBs that turned out to be good pros. Then we can compare our QB lists to see which one is bigger and better.
