Take away his medical issues and what are we really looking at as far as his negatives go?
- He's not as effective outside the pocket. From that "Athletic" piece I linked in my earlier post: "For all of Penix’s fireworks this season, his expected points added (EPA) on throws outside the pocket ranks just 48th in the FBS. He’s also 92nd in completion rate in those instances, having connected on just 28 of his 61 throws."
- Ability to "process" defenses is concerning. There's no doubt the Texas game was his best College game, but if you watch other tape from this season, Penix is the definition of a Riverboat Gambler QB in the mold of Jeff George, Gardner Minshew and even Nick Mullens. He believes in his downfield accuracy so much that it doesn't matter what the defense looks like pre/post snap, he makes his mind up about where he's throwing the ball and most of the time his NFL-level WR's (Odunze, McMillan & Polk will all be drafted in April) come down with it because the opposing DB's aren't NFL-level talent (Texas doesn't really have any NFL DB's, unlike Michigan). I can see Penix working in a high-octane type of offense like the 1999 Rams "Greatest Show on Turf" or a Mike McDaniels offense in Miami, but outside of that, you need a QB to have really good processing skills to read defenses to know where to go w/ the ball vs putting up 50/50 downfield shots most of the time.
Some of this stuff can be corrected in a really good coaching/offensive environment, but Penix isn't exactly a "Spring Chicken", either, and that's the potential risk with "older" QB's: there's only so many new tricks you can teach an old dog...
