I have the same concerns, but console myself with the salary cap. Years of kicking the can down the road and a few young guys needing extensions has pushed them into a place where financial considerations should force their hand. It won't wipe the slate clean, but it should force action on a few of these contracts with aging vets that are giving diminishing returns.

I was just looking at some of the rosters the Phins put out and the progression of that on defense from 2019 to 2021 to get an idea of what Flores did over time. There was quite a bit of turnover of the D line.

By year three of the ten or so guys that got snaps, only three that I saw were there in 2019. There was a bit of draft capital in that change but most of it was mid to lower tier FAs that he ended up getting a fair amount out of.

And another interesting thing was his use of the Dline in coverage. 253 times for an edge in coverage. 62 times for a D interior guy. The vikings were 121 and 0 respectively. I bring this up because of tomlinson and other potential investments for the interior as well as what it means for investments on the edge and at linebacker.

I think phillips keeps his spot and of course Hunter and Smith are obvious keepers. But I could see Smith spending a lot more time on the interior and maybe they return Dtom but it really wouldn't surprise me if they go with a cheaper option who's more nimble and can drop into coverage. And I think they'll definitely shore up LB, but I think it opens the door for a guy like Vilain or someone of a similar body type to almost become that 'pseudo' linebacker who's parked at the line somewhere but has enough athleticism to drop into short coverage while the LB's and DBs get to the qb.

My point is, I think there's gonna be some odd and unexpected choices that are less conventional vs. what people would consider a typical player for a certain spot.

Which leads me to my next point. I think a big spend is gonna come at CB in FAcy. While it makes some sense to keep an eye open in the draft, I think they'll need to pair a vet with a pretty young and inexperienced CB room. Someone who's good at press coverage. It's not a deep pool though. It's too bad JC Jackson's contract is such a sh*t show. Otherwise I would consider taking him at a discounted rate to get him back in Flores hands. But that cap hit in SD is just too heinous.

question for a few guys who know a bit more about the sport, but I keep reading that Flores is still considered a finalist for the AZ job. They're also waiting till after the SB, so I'm guessing from a practical standpoint, he's got a very low chance of getting the job as they probably have their eyes on someone else... but can they hire him away from us since he's now signed a contract? Assuming no built in out clause forcing us to start over again, I'm somewhat curious how that works. It's one thing to not be able to deny a promotion at the end of a season. It's another before you've even started to fulfill any of it.

This is my fear as well...I mean Hicks is obviously gone its a no brainer and he has no ties at least. Peterson obviously should be gone as well he has no chance playing man, thats why he loved Ed. I think Kendricks will really be the main guy to show us if this new regime is changed or able to change (Wilfs) He should not be back, I think if you just get younger and faster at the LB position the defense will be better.

If Kendricks were younger and earlier in his contract he could return, but we badly need the $9.5M we gain by cutting him. You can replace him with a younger and better LB on the open market with that money.
