2. The intermediate is working for opposing Offenses because Hicks is bad in coverage and Kendricks is having one of his worst years in that regard from what my eyes are telling me.
I would like to see the position of the safties change a bit - just a few yards - before finalizing judgment on Kendricks.
Couple of things stand out here. 1. Donatell doesn't trust Bynum to player closer to the LOS like most Safeties do in the Fangio system. He's giving him extra space as a cushion for biting on Play Action or misreading an assignment. And he thinks Smith is too slow so he's keeping him back further as well. At least that's my guess.
2. The intermediate is working for opposing Offenses because Hicks is bad in coverage and Kendricks is having one of his worst years in that regard from what my eyes are telling me. Can you imagine if Winatron got his wish granted and Minnesota had 2 hulking ILBs that could consistently stuff the run?
Then again, that might not be a bad idea since Hicks and Kendricks aren't stuffing the run OR stopping the pass.
The Safeties playing so deep is hurting Hicks and Kendricks, to be fair. They appear to be having to cover more ground than ILBs on other Teams using the same scheme. Which is not a good thing to do with old LBs.
We're 29th in passing yards allowed, and yet from what it sounds like you're saying, the DBs are good for the most part? I don't buy it.
Highly recommend this video by Luke Braun, looking at the intermediate and deep completions over the middle of the field that the Vikings allowed to Miami. These are almost all the big plays the defense allowed in the game except for the one 16 yard run and the deep hole shot to Waddle along the right sideline in the 1st quarter.

Summarizing:
Some of the holes in the zone are due to errors on the part of players, reacting a beat late and not recovering in time. A few of the mistakes were egregious, especially Hicks on Gesicki’s second TD, and for my money Sullivan on the play he doesn’t pick up Tyreek in the middle of the field. Others were closer calls, single missteps or hesitations, like Kendricks on Gesicki’s first TD.
Few of the completions were due to CBs getting beat outright. Braun isn’t showing the defense’s wins but there were several plays where the Vikings defender stayed in phase and made a play on the ball.
The safeties are playing (too) deep, especially Bynum who often ends up 25-30 yards downfield.
My take is that this shows problems more with veterans getting used to working in the scheme, including a couple of good players whose talents (Kendricks in man coverage, Smith making plays in the box) aren’t being used as much under Donatell. I don’t see the players being too old or slow or bad aside from Hicks and Sullivan.
If they can continue to make adjustments as they get used to the scheme, their results will improve.
