I thought I would put this in the weekly College Football threads, but I think this probably deserves it's own thread going forward.
Since I believe the Vikings need to start thinking about the QB beyond Kirk Cousins and with the relatively poor QB room behind him, there's a strong possibility that the Vikings could be looking at drafting a QB in the 2023 Draft. Plus, with the 2023 QB Class expected to be extensive - especially compared to the 2022 QB Class - it's worth keeping tabs on the Top QB prospects throughout the 2022 College season to see how they're doing.
The chart below lists the Top 25 2023 QB prospects and their stats throughout the 2022 College Season, along with a few "bio" stats (Height/Weight/Age). I put this together so I can just thumb down through the QB prospects quickly, look at their stats (both on-field and BIO) and see who might be a possible fit for the Vikings as the college season progresses. Also, we all tend to focus on only the Top QB prospects (Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, etc), but there's always a few QB's that emerge as the College Season progresses (Zach Wilson, Kenny Pickett, etc) and I'd like to follow those along throughout the season.
The list will be updated each week for the on-field stats and the rankings will be adjusted periodically.
Dropped-off:
- Sam Hartman, Wake Forest: on 8/10, Wake Forest stated Hartman was "out indefinitely" for a "non-football related medical condition". The last time we saw Hartman was the ACC Championship game vs Pitt where he just completely fell apart mentally as the cameras showed-him really upset with himself after throwing some costly INT's in that game. I was interested to see if he could rebound and get back up from the mat after that bad finish to Wake Forest's great 2021 season, but we'll have to wait and see what happens with him this season. I wish him the best on whatever non-football condition he's dealing with.
- Adrian Martinez, Kansas St: transferred from Nebraska but threw for just 53 yds in Wk 1 and we need a bit more statistical sample size to include him over others going forward.
Added:
- Clayton Tune, Houston: generated some "buzz" in the 2021 season and is starting to generate a little more prior to the 2022 season and he lead a great comeback road win vs UTSA in Week 1.
- Michael Pratt, Tulane: some have called him the "best kept secret in College Football" and he's on the Maxwell Award watch list to start the season. He received a little "buzz" in 2021 after Tulane nearly shocked the Sooners to start the '21 season, but that faded as Tulane finished with a 2-10 record with Pratt surrounded by an overall poor team. Even though he'll continue to go "under-the-radar" - even with big stats - the fact that he's on the Maxwell list means he's getting noticed, regardless of the team he's on.
Week 1 Notes:
- Only 6 of the 25 QB's lost their Wk 1 matchup, but 3 of them (JT Daniels, Cam Rising, Jeff Sims) were facing team with QB's on the Top 25 list. The QB's who lost and weren't facing other Top 25 QB's were Phil Jurkovec (BC), Aidan O'Connell (Purdue) and Jayden Daniels (LSU). Jurkovec stands out a bit since Boston College lost at home to Rutgers, something that probably shouldn't happen, and I think he continues to underwhelm as a QB prospect.
- Two QB's generated a QB RAT above 200.0 (T Van Dyke & G McCall), while three others failed to get to a RAT of 110.0 (D Leary, A O'Connell & J Sims).
- Two QB's failed to generate at least 200 All-Purpose Yards (APY): Tyler Van Dyke and JT Daniels, with Daniels standing out since his team went head-to-head in a rivalry game vs Pitt.
- I really liked Anthony Richardon's performance vs Utah; I wasn't expecting much from him in the way of pre-snap ability, but Florida is running a bunch of pre-snap motions (somewhat "Shanahan-like") and for him to operate that being a redshirt-Sophomore speaks volumes. I also thought Kedon Slovis had a "solid"/efficient game in a big opener vs West Virginia - throwing for 300 yds and a solid 80%+ COMPL % is a good way to open up the season.
- I didn't like NC State's Devin Leary - they did open up on the road in a rivalry game vs ECU, but I don't like his "wind-up" throwing motion and he make some crucial mistakes in the 2nd half that led to ECU's near comeback win. He had a lot of "hype" from the ESPN staff so I was expecting a bit more.
Week 2 QB Matchups to Watch:
- Will Levis (Kentucky) @ Anthony Richardson (Florida): probably the biggest QB matchup so far in the young 2022 season as both QB's are projected Round 1 prospects. Anthony Richardson had a great debut Week 1 vs at home vs a very good Utah team and Will Levis has generated some "Josh-Allen" type buzz.
- Hendon Hooker (Tennessee) @ Kedon Slovis (Pitt): I thought Slovis had a very solid/efficient Week 1 game/win vs West Virginia, and he'll certainly generate a bit more buzz if he can do that for two straight games against another solid non-conference opponent.
- Caleb Williams (USC) @ Tanner McKee (Stanford): Caleb Williams is a top 2024 Draft prospect, but even so, it's a big early PAC-12 matchup and a test for Tanner McKee as USC (now with L Riley as Head Coach) has started to generate some "buzz" as the top team out West, especially with Oregon faltering in Wk 1.
- Blake Shapen (Baylor) @ Jarren Hall (BYU): similar to the prior matchup, Shapen is a 2024 Draft prospect, but he really came out in the 2021 BIG XII championship game vs Ok St and this is a tough test vs a good BYU team led by Jarren Hall. BYU has a tough schedule and Hall will get many opportunities to prove himself over the course of the season and this is Test #1.
- Cameron Ward (WSU) @ Wisconson: Ward gets his first test vs a ranked team on the road as the Cougars travel to Madison in a big non-conference game.
