Michael Penix, Jr (Washington) @ Dorian Thompson-Robinson (UCLA): the Bruins are undefeated and Thompson-Robinson has played really well so far. Can Penix Jr. continue his breakout season on the road in the PAC12? It's a double-dose on Friday Night as this is the late game after Tulane/Houston.
UW 32, UCLA 40. I missed the 2nd half. But what I saw:
UCLA D Thompson-Robinson looked unstoppable and drove down the field with ease. UCLA's RB Charbonnet looks like a beast which helped DTR but still he is a very athletic, very focused in the moment QB (hurdled a guy). He has a nice tight, nice touch, and catchable spirals for WR's. He has the best completion percentage in the PAC, and I can see why. He carved up UW's defense like Jalon Hurts did the Vikings a couple of weeks ago. He finished 24/33, 315 yds and 3 TD's.
UW Penix had a brutal first half. UW started with a nice scripted opening drive but Penix did throw a bit high and was bailed out by some great WR catching. 2nd drive ended in a safety (RB fumbled a pitch into the endzone) and the momentum went UCLA's way the rest of the half. Penix was pressured constantly, had his first sack (2 total in game), had little time for plays to develop so a lot of incompletes, and threw 2 INT's trying to force things. He didn't see the 2nd defender in the area. UW had very few rushing attempts after the safety. So basically, UCLA had a free rusher on almost every drop back and while Penix did avoid a lot of sacks with his quick release, he was shaken for sure.
This is the type of pressure game I wanted to see out of Penix, mainly to see how he handled things. And I missed the 2nd half because I had to work the next morning. Dang it. UW must have figured things out in 2nd half and Penix must have regained his composure because he finished the game throwing 33/48, 345 yds, 4 TD's, and the 2-1st half INT's.
