The Wilfs Fire Spielman on Monday! As much as I miss Funkytown Reignman Danchat and everyone else, I just haven't been able to get excited about this team with Spielman making the calls but I heard the Wilfs may look to shake things up this offseason so I figured now was as good a time as any to let my disdain for Spielman out in one huge rant! If you missed my walls of text you're in for a treat and just to be nice I'll do one of them TL/DR thingie majigs for everyone else.
TL/DR - Spielman failed to support his coaches vision of run the ball and play defense. Zimmer never wanted Kirk. He tied up over 40% of the cap on Cousins, Diggs, Theilan, and Rudolph at one point and hired a pass happy offensive coordinator that ended exactly how you would imagined. Spielman doesn't know how to build a cohesive team, he just signs, hires, and drafts the guys he likes. It's off NFL Meta to overpay at QB and RB and the cap would be even tighter if Buffalo didn't trade for Diggs. Corner's gotten so bad because of all the busts he's drafted and I don't think he's added a single difference maker on defense in 3 years. The 2021 class barely contributed at a time we desperately needed cheap value. Ever since going 13-3 with Case Keenum, the teams only regressed and gotten older.
One of the biggest edges in the NFL right now is to have a QB on a rookie deal or a QB willing to take less pay to help the team. Of the last 16 superbowl winning teams, 6 of them had rookie QB's. Mahomes - Chiefs, Wentz - Eagles, Wilson - Sawhawks, Flacco - Ravens, Eli - Giants, Roethlesburger - Steelers. 4 out of 16 is just Tom Brady (lol) who takes a pay cut to help the team. The remaining 6 would be Peyton Manning(2), Drew Brees(1), Aaron Rodgers(1), Eli Manning(1), and Ben Roethlesburger(1).
Because Rodgers was a backup to Favre to start his career, his 2nd contract wasn't crazy and when GB won the superbowl, 20 other QB's made more than Rodgers so if anything he more supports the cheap QB strategy. Peyton had to ditch his original team to join a stacked Denver one because the Colts had trouble building a great team around his salary. Bree's, one of the greatest ever only has one superbowl win and it's tainted by Bounty Gate. (I'm still salty btw)
The seahawks haven't been back to the superbowl after paying Wilson, neither have the Packers after paying Rodgers. Atlanta and Baltimore fell apart after overpaying Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco and it looks like we'll be joining them. The Raiders haven't done squat after over paying Derek Carr and the 49ers regret making Garoppolo the 5th highest paid QB in 2021. The Eagles overpaid Wentz and immediately traded him to IND but good on them for realizing their mistake and shame on you IND.
We ourselves managed to go 13-3 with an underpaid Case Keenum at QB so with all of this evidence of cheap QB's = good and expensive QB's = bad what does Spielman do? Gives Cousins the most ridiculous, fully guaranteed deal the NFL had never seen before LOL. And if that wasn't enough, the dip sh*t goes and extends him! >< I just... what??? WHY?
Spielman failed to support Zimmers vision for the team. I don't see why we couldn't have been on the exact same trajectory the Tennesse Titans are on. They found a guy that could run their offense in Ryan Tannehil and he's only the 12th most expensive QB. Otherwise, they built the team around head coach Mike Vrabel's ideals and are now benefiting from that commitment. Spielman however, had over 40% of our cap at one point tied up on Cousins, Diggs, Thielan, and Rudolph, a pass catching TE that doesn't block with a head coach that wants to run the ball and play defense. If that wasn't bad enough he hires a pass happy OC in John Defuckface that fit with Zimmer about as well as Oil and Water would have paired together. Guess where that genius is now? The Chicago Bears, yeah... sorry Fields you're f*cked... well at least till the bears clean house in a couple days. I honestly feel bad for Zimmer. I don't think he'll ever take us to the superbowl but he also didn't deserve to go out like this.
Spielman doesn't know how to build a cohesive team. He just signs, drafts, and hires the guys he likes whether it makes any sense or not. Should we get some O-line help or just let it suck for 10 years? Oh you know what, we probably need some corners since we let Rhodes, Waynes, and everyone else go, maybe we should address that situation? Nah f*ck it, we'll just force it in the draft and start 3 new rookie corners cause there's no way that could go wrong!. Oh sh*t it did go horribly wrong, I guess we should sign f*cking BRESHAUD BREELAND AND START HIM cause we have no cap for anyone worthwhile since we also had to sign Pat Peterson. f*ck I would have fired him just for how that disaster at CB played out.
Spielman hasn't added a real difference maker on defense in like 3 years. Hell, even serviceable guys have been hard to come by. Yes we have some amazing talent like Jefferson and thank goodness we were lucky enough Buffalo was willing to trade for Diggs and we got even luckier Jefferson fell past the eagles or the cap hell we're in now would feel like a tickle and the one bright spot on the team wouldn't be here.
However, other positions leave a lot to be desired and our depth sucks which is especially bad in a Covid laden season. The 2021 draft had hardly any impact at all and it wasn't much better in 2020, 2019, or 2018. I mean think about it. Kirk is playing far better than I thought he would and certainly way better than Keenum did and yet we haven't even sniffed a season as good as that 13-3 year. Zimmer didn't forget how to coach, the teams just mostly the same but older, a step slower, and a bit more busted. When you overpay a guy like Kirk Cousins who's good but not Peyton Manning or Drew Brees you have a limited window to win the superbowl before the team falls apart and we mostly wasted the 2018 season.
When Spielman makes a trade, it's usually him getting fleeced. Bradford, Ngakoue, Herndon... Spielman always thinks we're just one emergency fill in from winning the superbowl and he wastes a lot of resources. It's the same thing in the draft when he's trading back 50 times for an extra 7th round pick while every other GM can't get to the phone fast enough to take advantage of him. It blows my mind how many times there will be good players at positions of need available and he trades back for basically nothing. it's not rocket science, the earlier you pick the more talent will be available and the more likely you are to find a player that will actually contribute and make an impact. Spielman seems to think if he throws enough sh*t at the wall some of it will stick but the problem is it's still sh*t!
Bottom line, Spielman didn't even come close to getting the job done, every decision he's made lately has been subpar and the team has done nothing but regress while the salary cap has been maxed out. Blame Zimmer all we want, I'm on board with some of that but you don't run a team for as long as Spielman has with no superbowl appearances before we just have to say it's not in the cards. Every team he's ever made has had some big Achilles heel... usually it's the O-line, sometimes it was shoddy QB play, now it's CB and the aging defense.
He will never get us to the superbowl so until he's gone I can't take this team, destined for mediocrity and at best a 1 and done in the playoffs, seriously.
