To avoid having to repeat myself over and over, I am just planning to link to this thread going forward whenever someone uninformed says we need to extend Kirk to save cap.
Teams are capable of converting salary cap hits of players to signing bonus and spreading that cap hit over multiple void years. NO did it with Brees at the end of his career, we essentially did it with Barr this year. It isn't hard, it is in the player's best interest to do it, and it is what the Vikings should have done going into the 2020 season. It accomplishes the exact same thing an extension lowering Cousins' cap hit in 2022 would, except by doing this you don't have to lock into a player for more years. The other big difference is that the Vikings will have more buying power in free agency in 2022, because they will not need to worry about paying Kirk 45 million in 2023 (yes, that is what it will likely be with his new salary on top of the converted signing bonus), and can backfill free agent contracts. Win-win-win.
If you are reading this, and continue to call for an extension because we need to save cap on that 45 million, I wish nothing but the worst for you going forward. Being uniformed of these void year options is a valid excuse for posting something that uninformed, NFL contracts are complex things and I don't blame anyone for not knowing this was an option. Now you know though, so there is no excuse.
Extend him if you think he is the best way to win a SB. Not to save cap, not because you are afraid of getting worse at the position.
