When I think about Kirk on the Vikings and where we would be without him, most of it actually has little to do with Kirks actual play. But, as we have done for how many times now, twice we have extended him and keep doubling done on this TEAM. That is where my problem lies.
Our best chance with Kirk was 2019, and realistically it wasn't even a chance because of how good that Niners team was that year. Brady, yes the greatest to do it, wouldnt have won that 2019 game in San Fran on this Viking team. Why? Because it would be similar to his playoff games in Denver vs Von Miller and Demarcus Ware. You pressure Brady and get to him he looks very average. Sure he probably makes the game close in the second half. That San Fran team was loaded. While that Saints win was fun for that week, it gave ownership a false hope of that Vikings team that was on the decline defensively and still a terrible Oline. Regardless of QB play that Viking team wasnt close. That loaded Chiefs team with Pat Mahomes, got very lucky to beat the Niners. Ironically if you put Kirk on that Niners team they likely win it all, thats how good they were.
It's not that Kirk, even on that contract, could never win a SB. It's that in order to pay a QB like Kirk that contract you need to have everything else in place with a top level roster. That is where I think signing him the first time made sense even if I never really liked him, I get bringing him in initially with that team. It's since that defense fell off that is the issue and how we are doubling down now with these more recent teams like you say.
I think we had a chance in 2019, I have shown a breakdown but the offense was getting open down the field. Kirk just wasn't making the throws you need in those types of games, I think most top QB's could have made them pretty easily at times even if you watch the film again (Kirk was still upright in these situations). As we saw last game too there are often times where Kirk doesn't take a step or 2 many others would make to create time even when there is pressure. We had a very talented group with a great defense to pair with weapons like Diggs/Thielan/Cook among with various solid role players. I am not sure Kirk would have won with the 49ers, I think we could have beat that 49ers team if they had Kirk playing like he did against us and we had a top QB. I agree with you in a sense that it isn't all Cousins fault but I think that 2019 year was a great example of how he will still be an issue in the biggest moments even with a lot of talent/help around him like we had coming off the NFC championship game when he got here.
But anyways I do agree more times than not Kirk isnt going to win you that away game in the playoffs. Maybe he just likes away domes? I think the only real chance Kirk can win you a super bowl is if hes playing that home game throughout the playoffs to get there. To be clear, I wanted to start this thing over with the new regime. Kevin, along with Zadarius Smith signing really was the reasoning I dont mind this 1 year trial again along with a relatively weak NFC. If we were in the AFC Id be laughing if we tried to run it back with this team.
