I just heard on the rumor mill that Sam Darnold may be available for a 3rd or 4th round pick due to the qb market drying up a bit. Shouldn't the Vikings jump all over that considering we have 6 picks in those 2 rounds? I would rather take a chance on Darnold being our qb of the future than drafting a Kyle Trask in the 3rd or 4th round. I think Darnold has a lot of talent that needs a reclamation following the Jets experience. Let him sit behind Cousins for a couple of seasons and learn how to play the position again.
OK, Zimmer would not be the only QB influence, so it would be our OC Klint Kubiak and QB Coach Andrew Janocko; have they proven to be good at developing young QBs? Kubiak coached Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch in Denver. Hmmm. Janocko, before coming to Minnesota, helped develop Josh Freeman and Mike Glennon in Tampa.
Maybe one or both would blossom with a promising young student. But without any past history of success, that's wishful thinking. I think there's a reason Spielman gets veteran QBs both to start and backup: this staff may not be able to develop a young QB, and probably does not want to do so.
I really wouldn't bother thinking about a young QB here until Zimmer is done.
