Then we get our ass kicked in the playoffs and these dummies extend him? No I want this to be hard to see what it really is with Kirk a inflated season could make these clueless guys extend him. We can't afford 45 next year for Kirk. 20 for Hunter and a ass load for O'Neill plus others. It will be hard to field a team. Something has to give eventually don't it? Kirk get's a 15million bump next year that will be a factor surely.

After the draft and offseason I feel like ownership and even Rick aren't going to accept just a division title. There is a lot of Vikings players and I think coach/coaches that are on there last shot along with Kirk. There wont be anymore extensions with Kirk or things he can prove, if he doesnt win a super bowl he will likely be cut latest by beginning of 2023 when the dead cap hit is only 10 mill I believe. I personally don't want Rodgers to leave the packers because that means he will likely be going to a TEAM that is better than the Packers, and the ultimate goal of the Vikings should always be super bowl. Lets be real yes the packers went 13-3 last year but they are going to regress this season with or without rodgers. Im not really worried about them either way. I wouldve like to deal with that 45 million dollar hit that Kirk is getting in 2022 last year when it locked in, but I think the Mond drafting gives the Vikings a little bit of leverage. Its tough because we would have to find a trade partner with Kirk to let him go after this season. Say we miss the playoffs, we still cant cut Kirk so yes we may try and find a trade partner but I just dont see the market anywhere for Kirk so I see him playing this season and next at least. I still dont think the 45 million will absolutely cripple us there are ways around it, does he deserve that right now? No way but it isn't the end of the world in my opinion. I dont agree with the extension after the Saints playoff game. It was a big step for him but the Niners game shouldve showed us how far we really were from a real TEAM. Ill say this though I still think the Vikings can win with Kirk, regardless it will need to be a total team effort and that means a great Viking defense and the Oline to take a step forward which I think both will happen this season.

I will just take this line just to save space. Loved the post though bud. I agree with you, like usual. I believe obviously the best scenario is winning it all. If we don't I said long ago I would let Kirk go. The thing that I want to happen if we can't win the Super Bowl is have a good year, I think that would drive up Kirk price and we can find some trade value. If we miss the playoffs we stuck with him for 2022.

Plan A: Win the Bowl and I will shut up on Kirk for all times sake. He can even get extended to a record deal. Fall short even almost win it I would let him go short of a missed FG from 20 yards from the kicker or something obviously not his fault in like the Bowl. Even if we lose early and it is not his fault I would trade him to get value. Zim all he has to do is maybe get us to playoffs and a win and then I will keep him. Kirk for me is all or nothing. To get back on topic Lock O'Neill up bet as long as Hunter get's locked up too if he bounces back then it's all good. I clearly love Hunter, he is one of my favorites. *lol*

When accounting for regular season adjustments – such as the expiration of the top-51 rule (following the last preseason game), paying 16 practice squad players and budgeting for in-season contingencies – the team effectively has $5,894,684 to work with.

According to Darren Wolfson of KSTP, the Vikings have had ongoing extension talks with Harrison Smith and Brian O’Neill for a few weeks. I don’t see any other players getting extended at this time.

On how much these extensions could cost:

Joel Corry of CBS Sports said on Wolfson’s “The Scoop” podcast that Harrison Smith should be looking at a floor of $14 million per year. He later said on his own podcast that he doesn’t know that Smith will reach Justin Simmons territory ($15.25M/year). Simmons is the highest paid safety in the league

As for Brian O’Neill, Corry said he also expects a $14M/year floor, Brad Spielberger of PFF predicts $15-17M/year and Dan Graziano of ESPN noted the Vikings need to reach the neighborhood of $18M. Deals for Ryan Ramczyk (Saints) and Taylor Moton (Panthers) have significantly adjusted the right tackle market in recent weeks

Considering Smith’s age, 32, the Vikings are likely seeking a 2-3 year extension whereas O’Neill, 25, can expect a long-term agreement. Under Wilf ownership, the start of training camp is normally when the team announces new contract extensions.

@robdn1 Why hasn’t O’Neil gotten a new contract yet and why wasn’t the Hitman extended (to drop his cap hit)?

I’m not quite sure why those things haven’t happened yet. Last year Dalvin Cook didn’t sign until right before the beginning of the season but I did expect them to come earlier. Possible that the RT signings elsewhere threw things off with O’Neill. Harder to say with Smith. I’ve wondered if he wants to wait and see how all of this plays out before deciding to stay.

Thomas via email: There seems to be little talk or speculation about new contracts for O’Neill and Smith. Meanwhile new contracts for right tackle and safety have gone through the roof elsewhere. Any predictions?

I’ll predict that they both have new deals by Week 1. O’Neill signs for five years, $75 million with $40 million guaranteed and Smith signs for three years, $45 million with $25 million guaranteed. This team always seems to find a way to get the deals done.
