In the NFL, you have QBs who have the stuff to beat good defenses and you have QBs who good defenses easily shutdown. Most of the time, that latter group ends up in the second half of most QB rankings, since even when they play bad defenses they don't always have success. There are QBs however, that excel at beating up on bad teams, inflating their numbers to the point that when you average in the bad games they have against better defenses, they still come out statistically in the top 16. Our QB takes that to the extreme.
Edit:
After being admonished by Funky for being too subjective, here are the numbers:
Average Passer rating against top 10 passing defenses since 2018
Brees: 103
Ryan: 96
Rodgers: 95
Stafford: 93
Wilson: 89
Carr: 88
Cousins: 77
Record against top 10 passing defenses since 2018:
Brees: 5-2
Ryan: 2-3
Rodgers: 7-5-1
Stafford: 1-7
Wilson: 4-5
Carr: 1-6
Cousins: 0-10
Average points scored against top 10 passing defenses since 2018:
Brees: 29 (this is padded quite a bit by a single game against SF, but he is probably still #1 without it)
Wilson: 22
Stafford: 21
Rodgers: 20
Ryan: 19
Carr: 18
Cousins: 13
Average depth of target against top 10 passing defenses since 2018:
Stafford: 5.7
Wilson: 5.51
Carr: 5.41
Ryan: 5.36
Rodgers: 5.25
Brees: 4.87
Cousins: 4.5
I will work on adding Brady, but assume he will be pretty good in most of these numbers despite his decline. At that point I will have the top earners for 2018-2019 who were not hurt or Phillip Rivers (I don't see any value in comparing against his 2019 season, he sucked, we know he sucked).
Stafford surprised me but he was really, really good in 2019, especially against the top D's. His 2018 was right around Cousins-level, but 2019 he might have been the most difficult to stop QB in the division. Ryan was also pretty surprising, but he has great WR's and benefited a lot from prevent defenses similar to Carr.
Cousins was exactly what I thought he would be. I didn't look at any of these numbers before getting the averages, and knew he would be last in all of them. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can look at these numbers and not be completely depressed about the next 3 seasons. Unless we have a defense that can hold playoff teams an average of under 13 points a game in the postseason, we cannot win with him.
And people wonder why I rip the guy.
On a positive note, the Vikings defense showed up huge in this research. Ryan, Wilson, Brees and Rodgers had some of their worst games against us.
Yay!
Sorry man. You did some good research but I think you're looking at a grain of sand and not looking at the ocean. I don't think any Lions or Raiders fans would actually take their own QB over Cousins right now (trust me, I read their forums). This is such a subjective and arbitrary way to compare QBs. How often do the Vikings play teams that have a top 10 passing defense? Not often. Also, if you are game planning against one of these teams, wouldn't you plan to run the ball more than you usually would? In that same span you mentioned, how many of those same QBs have won road playoff games? Only Cousins lol. See, I can cherry pick too. Do you really think Carr is better than Cousins? Last time I checked, Raider fans were still complaining how he threw the ball out of bounds on 4th down! My point is, you can take some arbitrary stats to make any QB look terrible. Look up Rodgers' record when trailing in the 4th quarter in any game. It ain't pretty.
Cousins is much more successful against lesser teams than Carr or Stafford, and when I started this I thought those two would be similar to Cousins against better Ds. I was wrong, but they have an advantage of constantly being down big that Cousins didn't have as much. However, it would be interesting to see if what you said was true about the fans of those teams preferring Cousins.
Can I ask what stats I should look at to avoid this being "cherry picked"?
Oh, and Wilson won a road playoff game last year. Brees hasn't played in one because he is more successful in the regular season.
