The Vikings have options this offseason... Which is the best route to take?
Re-Loading:
IMO this is the easiest route to go. This option keeps status quo minus a player or 2. Zimmer and Spielman stay, players we always discuss (Joseph, Rhodes, and Reiff) stay at reduced contract rates, Cousins gets extended, and additional money is used to pick up mid-level OL/DL help. With this route, the band stays together for another push to the Super Bowl in 2021.
Re-Tooling:
This is a more difficult route to take, but could prove to be crucial for a sustained run. When I think of re-tooling, I think that the team takes a step back for a year in order to gain draft capital/free up cap space to make another 3-5 year run. In this scenario, the Vikings let some of their veterans go, they trade productive players a year early (Smith, Thielen/Diggs, Kendricks/Barr) to obtain multiple draft picks, select a QB high and let them sit under KC until his contract expires. The Vikings start 2021 with a QB who learned for a year on the bench, cap space, and a couple more high round draft picks. And perhaps a new coach/GM!
Re-Building:
This will be the most difficult route to get buy in. Especially with Zimmer and Spielman on expiring contracts. In order for this to work, they would have to either fire both now, or extend them so they truly embrace the rebuild. Imagine the tire fire of 2011 after unfinished business failed and the roster turned over. They could find trade partners for Cook, Thielen and Diggs, Smith and Harris. And hopefully find them in the scenario Miami is in with 2-3 1st round draft picks, 2-3 building blocks.
Which route do you want the Vikings to take?
