What qualifications do you think Mike Zimmer has that makes him a good HC? Not what makes him a good DC, or defensive coach. And no, his players love him, he is so lovable, I love how he curses, etc. doesnt make him one.
I tend to think that Zimmer is a good coach (certainly not perfect - he has his weaknesses as we all do) but I really was having a hard time articulating why I believed that. I feel he's better than Mike Tice. He's certainly better than Les Steckel or Brad Childress. Leslie Frazier? Yeah - I think he's better than Leslie Frazier. "Feelings" aren't objective data, however.
Denny Green? Maybe. I decided to look up some head coaching stats:
11 games into their 6th season as head coach:
Denny Green 55-36
Mike Zimmer 55-35-1
Zimmer has 1 playoff win but Green had yet to win his first playoff game at this point. Green got the Vikings to the post-season 4 times (he would eventually get the Vikes to the post-season a 5th time at the end of his 6th season). Zimmer has been to the post-season twice. I don't know if Green is better for more consistently reaching the post season, or Zimmer is better with a better post-season winning percentage than Green. Depends on how you're defining it.
Coincidentally, at this point in the 1997 season the Vikings were 8-3 also. They finished, however, 9-7 dropping all but one of the final 5 games. Despite this abysmal finish, the Vikings made the post-season and Green ironically scored his first playoff win in an away game at NY (Giants)
If you think Green was good (or sucks) I submit that you probably feel the same way about Zimmer. Zimmer good? Yeah, I think so. YMMV
