I was going to make one of these sooner or later... but I thought it'd make sense to get this out after the first preseason game. Here's who I'm predicting to make the team:
I'm putting both Mike Hughes and David Morgan on the PUP list, as Hughes' ACL recovery has gone slower than expected and Morgan's offseason knee surgery has kept him out of training camp. I project they will miss the first 6 games of the season on the PUP list.
-- Notes on Players who made the team --
I'm not a fan of Mannion, but he's outplayed Sloter in training camp and didn't embarrass himself. He'll be the backup for now, but I still want Sloter on the roster.
Ameer Abdullah can return kicks and has great agility, but he's also very injury prone and fumble prone. I'd rather put Mike Boone on the roster and give him more looks than he got in 2018.
I think Jeff Badet can be the kick returner instead of Abdullah, and perhaps with his speed he could develop into a Aldrick Robinson-type - a one-trick pony who can go deep. Beebe seems to be the best candidate for the #3 job, though Jordan Taylor is the better outside receiver. Bisi Johnson has nice size and good hands, and while his upside is limited compared to other WRs, I think he's a guy who you could put out there in a live NFL game and he won't embarrass himself.
The O-line starters are set, and I think Hill and Dozier will be the top backups who will be active every game. Brett Jones is a borderline keep since Elflein can play center, and I could see him failing to make the squad. He would need to prove he can play guard.
The D-line looks mostly set - Mata'afa is certainly fighting for a spot, and while I could see the Vikings trying to sneak him to the practice squad, they may open the year with him on the roster. Holmes and Johnson should rotate very frequently with Joseph and Stephen.
The reserve LBs are all the same to me. Wilson is the clear top backup after starting several games last year, so I have Kentrell Brothers off the squad. Downs is with the 2nd team, so I'll give him a spot. 5th Cameron Smith is a very similar player to Gedeon, so I don't know why the Vikings wanted him, but I'll give him a spot too.
The backup DBs are hard to grade, as I don't know a ton about them. I had Kris Boyd as a 4th round prospect, so I'll like to see him make the team and get developed by Zimmer. Benwikere seems like a veteran guy Zim likes to have around. Derron Smith is a former Bengal, which also gets him points in Zim's book.
Kaare Vedvik should be the team's starting kicker, and Wile's spot should be safe. Kevin McDermott has been a fine long snapper, so I see no need to replace him with Austin Cutting.
Any thoughts?
