It didn't matter if the Vikings scored a couple more times or if Atlanta scored a couple of times. The game was over. Garbage time. This happens every week in the NFL. Are you new here?

Yeah, the shutout would have been nice. I guess scoring 45 points would have been nice too, but that's not how Zimmer does things. Run the ball. Eat up some clock. Get out with a W and no more injuries. Playing the twos and letting up a little bit made perfect sense, especially after the injury to Alexander and a couple of late hits/personal fouls. You try to get out of the game as healthy as possible - not trying to run up the score. Style points? For what? Anyone who watched that game knew it was over LONG before the clock read :00. "Oh, the Vikings only won 28-12." Shut your mouth! It felt more like 42-3! This is the problem with simply looking at the scores and not knowing the full context of a game, or in this case, the 4th quarter stats. We owned the Falcons early on ... and the game was out of reach for them not long after.

People are just nitpicking at this point. It's ridiculous.

The ONE negative about the game: our defense jumping offsides multiple times. We gotta clean that up, because in the future, we'll be playing teams who will take advantage of those freebies. We have to work on that, but overall, the Vikes kicked @$$ today, in all phases. I'll freaking take it!

If? If? We're talkin about if lol? I'm watching the Patriots complete 16 yard passes on 2nd and 17 here and actually picking up 1st downs. This is foolish. The Vikings closed out the game, period, end of story. You’re mocking Funky for “what if’s”, but the whole premise of your complaint is built upon what if. Losing 12-0 in the 4th quarter is a victory when you’re winning 28-0 going into it. It doesn’t matter if you win by 2 TDs or 5 TDs, there isn’t a Viking player leaving that game feeling any different in either case, because there’s never a point in the game where it ever felt like the Falcons had a chance. The team with the full trophy case, and not known for choking, kept their foot on the gas and buried their opponent, sending a message to a potential rival, and the rest of the conference. They continued to play tight coverage and take shots downfield because they know how to win and aren't afraid to lose. The other team, the one with the empty trophy case, the one that doesn't know how to win, the one that has a history of choking ... it rolled over, wasn't interested in sending a message, and played more like it was afraid of losing. One of these teams will probably be in the Super Bowl again, and the other will once again be saying, "maybe next year".

Our boy dvike27 has been going on about a championship mindset all offseason, so I'm wondering if saw a championship mindset in the 4th quarter yesterday. Apparently nobody around here even knows what that means lol. Probably because the team they root for has an empty trophy case and they never demand or expect anything more. The type of fans who enjoy moral victories and like to give their team participation trophies.

So where's the championship mindset? All I see is the typical Minnesota nice routine. Fans acting like their failure of a franchise knows what it's doing when it doesn't have the first clue. It's what you're used to though, mediocrity and low standards. It feels right to you. Get a lead, then play safe. It's not like a team has ever blown a 28 point lead before. Oh but they didn't so I guess it's ok. B-b-but they won and that's all that matters. Like I said, apparently nobody knows what a championship mindset means. Still a 16th place mindset.

What this franchise needs most is an attitude change, but I certainly didn't see it yesterday. Looked like the typical Vikings to me. The bigger the lead, the softer they play. It's not like that attitude hasn't bitten us in the ass enough times. So next time the Vikings choke a game away, just remember how you guys were ok with the soft attitude that led to the choking and 8-8 record, as we piss and moan about how unfair it is that the Patriots won 12-14 games again. *thumb_up*

It's what you're used to though, mediocrity and low standards. It feels right to you. Get a lead, then play safe. It's not like a team has ever blown a 28 point lead before. Some of it was, take some of the starters out, don't risk injuries. I am OK with that.
More concerned with the offsides, Rodgers is a master of the hard count, and could get many free plays if not corrected.

As for Zimmer. I haven't agreed with a lot of things he's done but I don't fault his approach to go conservative after going 28 to 0. He was trying to chew the clock. Sure we can go and attempt to put up 30-40 points, but who's to say it would have went that way? Over aggressiveness could've caused injuries and potential turnovers. Zim played it smart. The game was already over once we put up 28 points and they still had zero at the time.

Every conversation about a coach from the other 31 teams is always "but we're not Belichick or the Patriots waaaaah". You're right. We're not. Last time I checked, they haven't won 20 Super Bowls in a row or anything, so, guess what? There are other ways to win and be successful in this league. What Zimmer and the Vikings did yesterday is smart football. Sorry they didn't run up the score so the same people crying about style points could also then cry about "risking injury". Here’s the thing though... we’re not New England. And it’s not just a “mentality”, Kirk Cousins is not Tom Brady. We have a different approach to the game from start to finish. New England isn’t the only team to win a championship and there isn’t just one approach to winning a lot of football games.

You can talk about going for the jugular, and “championship mentality” all you want, but all that talk is meaningless to me. Do what is appropriate to win the game. If we were running into a brick wall all game, and Cousins was who got us to the lead we had, then maybe a more aggressive strategy would have been necessary to close out the game. But the “conservative” run the ball approach worked just fine, by the time the Falcons got their second possession in the 4th quarter there were 4 mins left and they were down by 3 scores.

Acting like there’s one answer to every scenario is IMO foolish. There’s no need to expose yourself to momentum shifting mistakes when you’re leading a game by 28 points in the 4th quarter. Had we kept the foot on the gas and Cousins fumbled for the 3rd time in the game behind a shaky line and it went back for a TD would you still be preaching this “championship” mentality. No, you’d be all over Zimmer for not chewing up clock and sticking to what was working, the run game. Had we stayed in man coverage, and they got Julio matched up with Jayron Kearse in the slot or Kris Boyd while Rhodes was on the sideline, and they scored a 15 second TD drive on one play, would you be pushing the same narrative of about “tight coverage”. Nope.

I don’t really care what the Patriots did, they had the exact same outcome as we did. A win is a win, what you’re going on about is a “win more” mentality and that IMO is MORE likely to cost you game that you lead by 28 than a conservative strategy.

A 16 game season results in about 480 minutes each of real-life "practice" for the offense and defense. Thats it! That's all you get. An entire half season is only 240 minutes each. That isn't much time, and the fate of some teams is decided by mid-season.

If you watched NE last night you saw that they don't sit back and play too carefully. They know that in order to win it all, you have to use all 480 minutes practicing how to win. Not how to be careful and try to avoid loss and injury. That's for playoff losers, like us.

That doesn't mean you have to be reckless, but you can save the careful play until the last few minutes of the game. We could have used the extra real life practice to prepare for next week's game against what will probably be a much tougher opponent.

Congrats to your team on the win. I watched the whole game and I was impressed with the defense and offense, especially Cook.

They might have lightened up a little in the last quarter, but at least they had a lead that could not be beaten. The Lions on the other hand.

For a first game of the season especially, I was so impressed with the Vikings. They are clearly the class of the NFCN at this early point. It was a fun game to watch, even if you're not a Vikings fan and are just a person who likes to watch good football. I watched a lot of butt-ugly first game football this past week, starting with that Bears/Packers game. But the Vikings look like a powerful team in all phases of the game. Sure, there are things to fix and improve. But for a first game of the season they executed a great game.
