3) Misuse of physical abilities: it's not often that you get someone with Barr's size and wing-span that can play LB at an NFL level, but yet, Zimmer and the Vikings defensive coaches don't seem to play to his physical abilities and instead, use him more as a glorified on-field defensive coordinator. Typically, when you draft a defensive player in a Top 10 of the NFL Draft, you're drafting for their potential primarily based on them having physical attributes that players below them don't have - in this case, Barr's Pro Day 40 time and height/length (arms/hands) were physical attributes that other LB simply didn't and don't typically have, but instead of playing to those attributes on the field, Zimmer and the defensive coaching staff don't utilize them and use him for his "intangibles". It's like buying a Corvette to commute to-and-from work when all you need is a reliable sedan.
That's an amazing observation about Barr that I feel we all should have seen for years. There were such raves about his physical attributes early - I remember serious discussion that he could even start at S if the Vikings needed, not to mention LB or DE. We all expect a top 10 defensive draft pick with freakish physical skills to look explosive and dominant, like Von Miller, Khalil Mack, or Aaron Donald. But even now Zimmer is talking about his ability to understand routes and coverage. "Intangibles, smart field general, knowledge of the game" are the kinds of things I expect to hear about some 4th-rounder who does well despite a lack of athletic ability. I like your analogy but it's almost more like we bought a corvette and leave it in the driveway and just use the sound system to play music in your yard.
