I can't think of another player in my lifetime who's gotten so much rationalizing ink about is he worth it and what exactly does he do anyway. It's the sort of thing you see when someone is embarrassed and trying to cover for it.
The great players in this game stand out as great and get paid accordingly. Barr gets the dough and stat-nerd blogger slappies write the excuses, while the rest of us are left scratching our heads.
Sorta... it does require a greater understanding of the game to truly understand a player's impact.
The most basic elementary understanding of impact is based on the raw stats that have been tallied for decades.
But to really understand impact, you need to understand what a player is asked to do and how successful they are at it. How do you quantify him getting the rest of the defense aligned? How do you account for an offense going in a different direction because of what a defender took away? How do you account for sacrifice, allowing another player to make a play?
As a really simple example (and I'm not saying Barr is at this level) consider prime Revis or prime PP. Even prime Rhodes to a slightly lesser extent. The only stat that really popped was the lack of targets headed their way.
Only with an advanced degree from football blogger U can one truly grasp the pigskin transcendence that is Anthony Barr. So I've been hearing for years. How fortunate that we got him on the cheap all those years.
