It's that time of the week again! Let's see how the Falcons stack up against the Vikings:
The Falcons are an interesting team. After starting the season 3-0 (although they barely beat the Bears and should have lost to the Lions on a play at the one yard line), they dropped 3 games in a row, including one to the Dolphins, blowing a 17-0 lead at the half. They've recovered from that rough stretch and they've won the last 4 of 5 games. They have to play the Vikings, the Saints twice (!), and the Panthers again. They have their work cut out for them...
The Falcons have a very well rounded roster with few weaknesses to exploit, but I can't say that they've lived up to their expectations. Their offense hasn't quite been the powerhouse it was last season, and they've got a great ground game in the Freeman/Coleman combo and using Julio to carve secondaries with Matt Ryan having some great games this season. The offense can vanish at times - they scored just 7 against the Patriots and zero points to a bad Miami defense in the second half of that game. They know how to choke away a game... (remember that last Super Bowl? Sorry, Falcons fans.)
The Falcons defense runs the 4-3 formation and uses Vic Beasley, last year's sack leader, as a pass rushing linebacker. He's been injured and rather ineffective this season, surprisingly enough. Grady Jarrett is really good at causing interior pressure but the Vikings have dealt with much better pass rushing teams, so I'm not concerned for our O-line. They have some very good run stoppers in the front seven, including Dontari Poe and Deion Jones, and they'll be difficult to deal with.
The Vikings should be licking their chops as the Falcons CBs in nickel sets will be Robert Alford, Brian Poole, and C. J. Goodwin. Alford has underachieved, Goodwin has scarcely played, and Poole is a solid slot CB but he's probably going to be whipped by Thielen. They'll need to rely on their safeties if their coverage is going to be any good. I'd keep the ball away from Keanu Neal, who's having a Great season. He is capable of taking over a game like D. J. Swearinger did in the Redskins game (2 interceptions).
The Falcons should probably add another CB to their team with Trufant hurt. We've seen some teams have injured CBs against the Vikings (Bucs, Packers, Rams) and simply be unable to cover our WRs.
Any thoughts?
