Let's take a quick look at this weekend's matchup between two teams that nobody thought were going to be 7-2:
Injury Reports
- My thoughts -
Getting away from the decrepit and and archaic system Jeff Fisher implemented was the Rams' biggest improvement. They've brought in Sean McVay, a guy who actually knows how to coach an NFL offense, and Wade Phillips, who is still a great defensive coordinator, and that's helped them improve to 7-2.
The Rams love screen plays and getting the ball to their long list of WRs. Watkins is the explosive play waiting to have a few big games like he did in Buffalo, Woods is having his best year in his career, and Kupp is a solid possession receiver. They'll even get Tavon Austin some run plays. He's basically Cordarrelle Patterson 2.0.
Once again the Vikings will face a formidable O-line (when do we get to play a bad O-line? It's been a while) that has a future Hall of Famer at LT. Our good pal John Sullivan is a top 15 center again as he's recovered from that nasty back injury. Their only weakness is Jamon Brown, who's been terrible for three straight seasons and not really improving.
On defense, the Rams have two weapons of mass destruction - Aaron Donald, the league's best defensive lineman (PFF rates him as the NFL's best player) who is legitimately elite in run stopping and pass rushing. Michael Brockers is quietly having an elite run stopping season as well... so the Vikings might want to try and run plays away from these guys.
This defense does have it weaknesses that the Vikings will need to take advantage of. Alec Ogletree has always been overrated and he can be picked on in coverage. Their outside linebackers have underachieved - Barwin and Quinn used to be very good starters but now the two of them are liabilities. Trumaine Johnson is surprisingly having a poor season will playing on the franchise tag, so Diggs might be able to torch him. Lamarcus Joyner is having a career year and sixth round rookie John Johnson (what a name) has been competent as well.
Any thoughts?
