Keep in mind that Trey Smith may not be the only UFA OG on the open market in the 2025 offseason. One player who I've always liked is IOL James Daniels - currently with Pittsburgh. He was drafted by Chicago in 2018 as a 2nd Rd pick and played very well for them over his rookie contract and I was baffled why Chicago let him hit the open market in the 2022 offseason and was hoping Kwesi would show interest during his rookie GM year, but he ultimately signed w/ Pittsburgh for $8.8m AAV for 3 years, which is a bargain these days considering what lesser IOL players are fetching on the open market. The thing I like about Daniels is that he has position versatility across all three IOL spots - he played LG, OC and RG for Chicago (and played very well) and he was off to a great start at RG for Pittsburgh this season before suffering a season-ending Achilles tear in Week 4. The Steelers have wanted to shore up their OL this season and have some younger talent and it's doubtful they would resign Daniels this coming offseason.
Given that Daniels suffered a season-ending injury, it's possible he won't/can't command a massive, multi-year contract with anyone and may need to settle for a lesser deal, but Minnesota's "culture" and "open window" along with his position versatility could be a big get for Minnesota. If the Vikings choose to retain Bradbury going into the final year of his deal, Daniels could start at RG, but if Bradbury suffers an injury, Daniels is someone who could step over into the OC role and could quite possibly be an upgrade instead of relying on Schlottman/Feeney. Plus, it would give more time for Jurgens to develop. The point is, Daniels is a solid IOL starting player who could give the Vikings an upgrade at one of their two IOL spots (OC or RG) and offers versatility along all three IOL spots, which is something Trey Smith doesn't provide. Also, Daniels is currently 27 and won't turn 28 until Sep 2025 so if he successfully returns from his Achilles injury, he should have a healthy # of years left at his current level of play.
Another UFA IOL player in 2025 is Chicago IOL Tevin Jenkins, whom Chicago drafted in the 2nd Rd in 2021. Jenkins had a rough start at OT in his rookie year, but after Chicago moved him inside (first to RG and then to LG), he's been very solid. I can't imagine the Bears letting him hit the open market with the need to protect Caleb Williams, but if he does, I would expect Minnesota to be interested. Jenkins has versatility along both OG spots, as well both OT spots, but not at OC.
it will definitely be a refreshing change to look at every available free agent and realistically have a chance to sign them
