On that note of it being difficult for Sam last game and him pressing too much, that is exactly what I was trying to explain in the earlier discussion. Sam Darnold has not shown to be playing at an elite QB level even based on those first 4 games because of how easy of situations he was often being put in. He made some nice plays in big moments but for the most part what was happening was he was just taking advantage of easier situations than most QB's get to deal with. He was showing that despite the narratives he could be a good game manager type QB in the right situations instead of a complete bust many wrote him off to be.
That just is not the same thing as being elite for that span or being worth the type of money some were hypothecizing about. This team has been behind for what, like less than 4 minutes this season? The defenses never made it as difficult on the QB as the Jets did last game either. When the pressure hits and a QB starts to need to press that is when you really find out if they are the type to lift those around them to another level or not. Darnold has plenty of time to improve in that area, this one game doesn't define him just like those first 4 didn't either. It's possible that early hit affected his play and either way I think he can be better in tougher situations moving forward.
To me he is still having a great year and we are lucky to have him at that price compared to what many other teams are paying for similar or worse play. It just isn't enough to change from the original plan and pay huge money for him as opposed to building up the roster more around JJ Mccarthy.
