Hey guys. As I said originally, I’m an Eagles fan. I posted this question because I’m a big JJ fan and I also happen to have him on a rookie contract in my salary cap league. I appreciate all the comments, you guys are a very knowledgeable fan base on this site, for the most part.
Just wanted to give my 2 cents as objectively as possible;
JJ looked very good in the preseason throwing the ball and he probably has underrated rushing upside, as well. He is a high character, high talent player who I think can lead an NFL team.
Sam has become a very good system qb for a great coach (as many of you have pointed out), but it just seems highly unlikely to me that the Vikings will pay Darnold when they have JJ on a rookie deal, all factors considered. The Vikings look fantastic right now, but even if you guys defy the odds and win the SB, while it would make the conversation interesting, I don’t think even that would guarantee paying Darnold given the cap implications, the system, and JJ’s talent along with the need to develop him properly, not to mention that, while Darnold deserves credit for playing well, your hot start is not all because of him, as the D has been lights out and the whole team is playing well.
Thoughts?
PS- big game this weekend, good luck!!
I don't see Darnold here next year, if that's what you're asking. If he keeps his play up though, some sort of tag and trade with the non-exclusive tag is a very real possibility. There will be QB needy teams that will be more than happy to pay something of value to secure his services if he continues to play well.
Given Watson's play in Cleveland, my gut feel is that they use this latest accusation to void the remaining guarantees in his contract and then go hard after Darnold. There are a few other desperate teams that could bite too. He will be the top FA QB this offseason if his play continues, and we have the ability to prevent that and make JJM sit another year. I'd personally rather go with JJM, but the non-exclusive tag is worth 2 first round picks and that would be very difficult for me to ignore from a strategic standpoint. If no one bites, you can potentially trade him for a first or a couple day 2 picks and let that team sign him. That's still much better than a comp pick.
