Sam Darnold revenge game.
Never forget: "He might be — can I say this — the most talented thrower of the football that the 49ers have ever had," Maiocco said.
...what?!
I'm not going into this game thinking it's a dub lol. They torched us last year. But it is a good test to see how much better the defense is under Sorenson.
Plus a test to see if Darnold is the real deal.

That's probably a good view to take. "On paper, " there should be no way Minnesota hangs with us, but I remember thinking that last year and we all remember what happened. I also seem to remember it being said during that game that the Niners haven't won in Minnesota since 1992 I believe, so for the last 31 years, it's been a weird place for us to play.
People keep repeating this, and while true, it's kind of a nothing burger.
1994: 49ers rest starters in second half of meaningless Game 16. Win Super Bowl.
1999: Terrible 49er team once Young was out.
2003: Mediocre 49er team
2009: Mediocre 49er team gets Favred
2012: Great 49er team, so we have the first real disappointing loss of this streak (2009 was more annoying than anything). NFC Champions anyway.
2018: Bad 49er team. This was before Jimmy tears his ACL, but even without that happening it's probably a 7-9 win team at best.
2023: Great 49er team. Close game, Brock gets concussed at the end. NFC Champions anyway.
So, of the 7 games, only 2 feature quality 49er teams that really should have won.
If there had been continual shocking losses that kept the team out of the playoffs, or maybe 2-3x the games, or playoff losses this would be an actual big deal. 7 games in 30 years just isn't all that bothersome. It's the time involved that makes the stat shocking, but the number of games involved is so low it drains all substance from it.

I was at this game last year. It's our revenge game. I hope Ward just bats it down this time before half.
They did look great against the Giants, and it will be a good test for this team. I'm not worried about starting slow, rather I'd like the team to end the season strong -- going into the playoffs.
Kirk Cousins and his experience and skill at QB beat our coverage scheme with quick hitting passes
Darnold is not the same type of QB (unless he took a huge step in development)

Like I said, the 49ers haven't won in Minny in over 30 years. That's just f**kin sad.
I don't think we'll lose this one. We certainly could because it's the NFL. If you remember at that time, Kirk was playing lights out and played lights out against us as well. Sam beat up on the decrepit Giants. It is the vikings home opener so they will have that going for them. But I expect a 10 pt win.
Brendel got his ass beat.
Is that graphic cut off or was Brendel's pass block grade really a 6?!
a 6.
The good news is that one of the Vikings guards did even worse (Ingram).

Just don't Daniel Jones this game, Brock.
I think the defense wants to redeem themselves after getting smoked last year in Minnesota. I don't think anyone is going to take darnold lightly, either.
I also think we will pick darnold off at least twice. our defense is going to be suffocating.
Ultimately, our offense will keep scoring and force the game in Darnold's hands and he will commit turnovers. It'll be glorious. We just can't get off to a slow start and let them control TOP and/or convert many third downs.

it'll be nice to slay that demon and win in that place. It will also be some good redemption for Brock from a year ago. I can't see them losing there two years in a row. Yes, victory and no injuries.
Week 1 was fun but on to the Vikings....
I think it is fair to say that CMC will be out again and it will be the Mason show once again....and that is perfectly fine. Looking forward to the Mason show along with the following:
How does Purdy deal with the Flores defense? Did not fare well late in the game last season. Flores will bring the blitz and give far more looks than the Jets did last night.
Jefferson vs Lenoir/Ward. I'm sure Jefferson will get Yiadrom quite a bit but I want to see our top corners against Jefferson. Great match ups.
Aiyuk's bounce back performance? We all kind of knew week 1 was not going to be great for Aiyuk and the game went just as we expected. But how does he play in week 2?
Darrisaw vs Floyd/Bosa
Can Hargrave and Collins win their match ups and get to Darnold?
Does Sorenson rush mainly four or does he get more creative and shows different looks?
Can we slow down Jones? He killed us in the divisional round last season and he looked good in week 1. Did the job vs Hall but can they repeat it against Jones?
I think this will be a competitive game early on but eventually we should pull away. I have a lot of respect for the Vikings coaching staff and think they have good talent, but this should not end like the game did last season.

We have not won in Minnesota for over 30 years and I felt their roster was underrated at the beginning of the season. I'm really looking forward to this game. Darnold can pass it very well when he has good protection and the Vikings bookends are very good. Our interior will need to win more this week. Last game was tough since Rodgers got rid of the ball so quickly all game and hardly threw the ball all that much. The Vikings will lean heavily to their run game as well so we need to get off to a good start and put them in a deficit.
Hufanga may return this week and I think it will be eased back into the line up and will not out right start or play majority of the snaps. By week 4 he should be a full go though.

This. They have Minnesota minus Addison and Hockenson, Rams minus Nacua, Patriots with Brissett at QB and the Cardinals minus a pass rush coming up.
If there was ever a good time to make do without McCaffrey, its now.

I'd be for bringing Breida back for those 4 weeks, his deal wouldn't be GTD since he didn't make the week 1 roster, and I think Mason, Guerendo, Breida, & Deebo could handle the RB duties, plus we have so many studs IMO, Deebo, BA, Jauan, Juice, Mason, Kittle, Cowing looked good, Conley too in preseason, plus we'll have Pearsall back week 5 most likely, I also like Saubert & Guerendo as potential weapons or decoys, plus our OL played really good Monday night, TW, Banks, & Puni are the best OL we have, Brendel & McKivitz need help, McKivitz had at least 2 penalties I believe Monday night, hope Banks is ok to go week 2 though, Burford wasn't bad IMO when he came in, just excited by this team.
Then the defense is amazing IMO, Bosa, Floyd, Hargrave, Collins, Elliott, Givens all did good on the DL, I don't remember if Beal or that PS player, can't spell his name for the life of me, did anything, I hope Gross-Matos is back this week, Warner, Campbell, & DFF played really well also on defense, secondary was good, other than the one drive where Rodgers took the Jets down the field for a TD, the second TD was kind of a maybe the refs were gonna blow it dead and the DBs thought so to, but other than that, Mooney, DMo, & Yiadom were good, as was Brown & even Odum, but want to get Hufanga back out there, wouldn't mind seeing Mustapha out there at some point this yr.
Special teams wise, not the best, but Moody is money, 6/6, including two from beyond 50-yards, that doink he had was funny, I showed it to my Mom, she laughed, at least it went in though, so far Moody is better looking, Wish only punted once, no KRs, Cowing had 2 PRs, & Pepper was good, when you don't hear the LS name, then that's a sign that he's doing his job.

Darrisaw and O'Neill are really good but Bosa will get his fair share of pressures and hits like he does every week. But yes, the interior pass rush has to win and will be the key on Sunday.
'll be interested to see how the offensive line does this week. They annihilated a Jets D Line that was Quinnen Williams and a lot of roster turnover in week one. If our O line continues to dominate, it's going to be a very, very good offensive season. Because they'll have much better games from Kittle and Deebo and Aiyuk coming. Schematically, it's a completely different challenge. The Jets are essentially a team that was trying to be 9ers east with the 4 man rushes and cover 3 variant zones (Saleh, of course, having come from here). But that left them as the 9ers defense, but worse. And the 9ers O spent all offseason playing those guys.
The VIkings do very different things. Brian Flores likes to put eight dudes around the line of scrimmage to threaten a zero blitz at all times while often dropping 8 and playing coverage. They want to mess with the timing in the quarterback's head.
Brock was truly awesome for the first 3 and change quarters of the game last year (Brock and Kyle often basically invalidate such teams that operate with strict zone coverage rules and the VIkings mostly drop into various zones after showing heavy pressure). In that game, the Vikings offense was killing the defense, Trent Williams was out so we couldn't run for beans. Deebo was out. Aiyuk was drawing extra attention. So it was Brock and Kittle and Jennings (and a well timed screen to CMC for a TD) that kept the 9ers in the game in spite of the D getting killed. And we know what happened. Brock suffered a concussion on a QB sneak on the second to last drive. Don't think he reported symptoms. But anyhow, the next play after the concussion was a very poorly thrown interception. And when the defense gave the offense one final shot, Brock threw a second pick on a play that I at least sympathized with - trying to do too much as we needed a TD (Moody having missed a chip shot earlier to make the deficit larger). So we lost back to back games. Rough.
Gonna need the offensive line to communicate and handle it when they bring all out pressure. Brock and Kyle to know and exploit the zone rules. Offensive line to provide the running lanes both left and right that just weren't there last year. (Trent and Puni are major upgrades on either side, obviously).
And on defense, we've got to pressure Darnold. It's that simple. And that requires a diet of more blitz packages than we saw on Sunday. And the coverage holding up with fewer bodies.
