I do not believe Darnold was brought in to be anything other than a short term starter until the rookie was ready to go or until he got injured. They went through all kinds of bs last year not being ready for Cousins being injured and Darnold was a response to that.

I never said Darnold would be a long-term starter.

I mean considering he's only signed for 1 YEAR is kind of a clue, you know?

My thing is the belief by some here that JJ will start from day 1 which is highly unlikely.

My best guess is he'll start a few games at the end of the season to get his feet wet. (though the ideal situation is him not even seeing the field in the Regular season until 2025)

I think it's ideal that McCarthy is so ready to go and so much better than Darnold that he starts all 17 games THIS year. I believe that at minimum McCarthy will start more games than Darnold this year 9-8. I can see McCarthy starting a lot more than that up to 17.

I think it would be very easy to say he would sit all year if they had Rodgers or Alex smith ahead of them like Love or Mahomes. Then it's easy to know. I get it. I probably wouldn't throw him out there right away either. If he was a 2nd round pick you could probably also say that. I'm just saying he was the 10th pick, it matters, and there's not a great starter ahead of him. That's all I'm saying. Circumstances will dictate when he starts. Ideally he'd sit for a year yes just saying that might not be how the season unfolds. Bridgewater wasn't supposed to start his first year either but Cassel got hurt and it just played out that way.

1. MICHIGAN WOLVERINES

Last season, Michigan became the first school to win two consecutive Joe Moore Awards, given to the nation’s best offensive line. The Wolverines should be the favorites to three-peat in 2023.

Zak Zinter is back at right guard and is my No. 3 interior offensive lineman in the country. The senior was the second-most-valuable Power Five guard last season, according to PFF’s wins above average metric. Drake Nugent transfers in from Stanford and is one of the best centers in the nation. His 84.1 run-blocking grade last year ranked third among FBS centers.

Michigan also returns another two starters in left guard Trevor Keegan and right tackle Karsen Barnhart. Meanwhile, Arizona State transfer LaDarius Henderson is the favorite to take over at left tackle for the departed Ryan Hayes. Over the past two seasons, Henderson’s 2.0% pressure rate allowed ranked fifth among Pac-12 guards.

As for depth, the Wolverines brought in Stanford tackle Myles Hinton, who placed fourth among Power Five tackles in 2022 with a 1.8% pressure rate allowed. Trente Jones also returns and ranked sixth among Big Ten tackles last season with a 78.1 grade.

They were a dominant run blocking unit, which is why they one that award. But pass blocking, specific the Tackles, was not good. PFF had them 6th out of the Big 6 QBs. It got better late in the year when they kicked their RT inside and the backup actually played better.

But then you go read the Scouting breakdowns for Zinter, Keegan and Nugent, the IOL. All point out these guys were better in Run Blocking and need developing in Pass Pro.

And then there's the actual tape. Where you can see lots of instances of 1 or both Tackles giving up instant pressure. Chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac were wreaking so much havoc Michigan decided to just run the ball at them since they couldn't keep McCarthy clean.

JJ is sort of coming to the opposite situation. Great pass blocking OTs. Poor run blocking IOL.
