* Here's the meat and potatoes - Atlanta is expecting the biggest tampering penalty in NFL history losing multiple picks including the 1st Rounder in 2025. That was from Archer himself.
* As a result of not having a pick next year for a QB to draft and sit a year behind Kirk they felt they needed to go ahead and get a QBOTF in the locker room versus waiting until the 2026 draft and not knowing what will be available and where their pick would be.
* Interesting on my conclusion with Penix. Are the Falcons going to cut Kirk loose after the guarantee of year 2?
Penix then would have 3 years left on the rookie contract and virtually no Kirk cap hit.
The only thing that makes sense is them thinking that 8 is the highest they will be picking in the next 3 seasons so they decided that unlike the Vikings they will take their QBOTF now and develop him while Kirk starts and have him ready to step in if and when Kirk either decides to retire or Oenix shows he is better and is ready to take over. That’s actually a better position to put yourself in than just letting a contract expire and have no succession plan in place which requires spending excess draft capital to resolve.
