The popular pre draft opinion was that the Vikings were the best team for every rookie QB to be drafted to because they have an offense loaded with talent and a rising defense.
Suddenly now that they got the QBOTF the story is mutating to say that he can’t possibly come in and be successful on this team in year 1.
First thought: you are conflating 2 separate sets of "opinions". "The popular pre draft opinion was that the Vikings were the best team for every rookie QB" was mostly coming from national sportswriters/media, who take a pretty high level view that is primarily assessing whether a rookie QB will have good receivers in place. I really don't see any of those sources "mutating". What you are referring to is people here or in other Vikings-specific forums asking things like whether our IOL or running game will support McCarthy.
The latter is more detailed from fans of this specific team. Some of us are not just accepting things like "offense loaded with talent" so easily. The Vikings have Jefferson, yes. Then they have Addison, who was good but seems to be getting treated like a WR2 on the caliber of Tee Higgins (which he is not), and a very good TE in TJ Hockensen who is coming off torn ACL and MCL and could miss half the season. Our WR3, which is a starter in KOC's offense, left and has not been replaced. I never read any of the national draft evaluators going into this level of detail, but I guess those of us who do burst the bubble of excitement about the team's near future.
If this team is really as talented as it was billed and if KOC is the coach/ Guru he is supposed to be
Second: You do see your own big "ifs" there, right? Aside from the talent level, what is Kevin O'Connell's proven ability to coach and/or "guru" a young QB? He is treated this way mostly due to reputation by association: he is connected to Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan. They are both reputed to be offensive gurus, so KOC must be as well!
The national writers (and sometimes the local ones) just make a lot of assumptions without evidence.
