Spencer Rattler?

Like others have elaborated on, the athleticism combined with the size (height) is the whole problem/concern. Agreed, you could get away with it their are outliers always but its for sure a concern and another knock on him. I think he palys faster than his 40 time, probably like a baker. In another draft or year I would absolutely take a shot on him. I think hes gonna go in the 3rd round latest, and hell be after Penix and Nix so QB7 I believe?

This... This is the project you take if you want to burn a mid round pick on a QB, but he's going to take a year or two to develop. I still think we draft a QB high. I'm in favor of both BTW. We need a QB and we're going to be developing one. May as well develop 2 along with Hall.

You're describing Bo Nix to a tee. A bigger/stronger/more athletic Drew Brees. 

Bahahhahaha. Yeah so do others and they got a much better outlook on Maye and have for TWO YEARS!!!

You do understand Maye has both accuracy and the ability to process at a high level.

POSITIVES

— Good athletic ability. Quick for his size, good speed to threaten defenses as a scrambler and designed runner.

— Very good arm strength. Throws with tons of velocity outside the numbers and down the field.

— Great ability to throw off-platform and under pressure. Can rip it when the pocket is cluttered or when he's on the move.

— Great accuracy. Throws well to all three levels and shows flashes of special touch.

— Above-average ability to operate within structure. Plays on time and knows how to get to the checkdown.

Maye hails from a sports family, with two brothers (Luke and Beau) who played basketball at North Carolina, where his father played football. According to multiple executives with different teams, Maye thoroughly impressed during his combine interviews, showing a command of the room, Xs and Os, and the good and bad of his college film.

What the film says
Arm talent
Spectacular. Maye can access all levels of the field and hit every route, whether on or off-platform. He is willing and able to change speeds and arm angles. His talent is rare.

Accuracy
Maye’s accuracy is well above average, though within the context of a top-3 pick, he gets dinged here. His short misses — most often throwing too far ahead of out-breaking routes and behind in-breakers — don’t always stem from sloppy footwork, so he may simply need more reps to grow out of these incompletions. Or, they’re a built-in bug of his game.

Otherwise, Maye hits receivers in stride on deep and intermediate routes as well as any quarterback in this class. He understands when to use a soft touch and when to rifle throws between closing windows or against tight coverage. Some of the latter completions are jaw-dropping.

Pocket presence
Maye’s pocket presence dipped at the end of last season but improved overall, while North Carolina fielded worse offensive line talent within a questionable scheme. He kept his eyes downfield in the face of pressure, hoping an open receiver springs free. He proved he can play with timing and reset his base after facing initial pressure.

Maye instinctively drifts away from unblocked blitzers — who breached North Carolina’s pocket far too often last year — but occasionally took direct hits, which must have stemmed from a lack of awareness and/or missed blocking assignments.

Decision-making
Maye is an attacking quarterback. He hunts deep throws whenever available, and particularly when he’s well-protected. He also protects the ball well, posting a 1.8% turnover-worthy play percentage last season, per PFF; which in the NFL would have tied for lowest in the league among starters.

Maye is a selective scrambler, preferring to throw first, but when he takes off, he's aggressive as a ball carrier, too. He will need to slide and seek the sideline more often in the pros, and hit more checkdowns versus pressure. Some back-footed deep balls Maye got away with in college — including for touchdowns — won't be available to him in the NFL.

Toughness
No doubts here. Maye can take a hit in the pocket and when scrambling. He bounces back from big hits and bad plays. He's strong on quarterback sneaks, as well. Maye has the respect of his teammates (two-time captain), and, by all accounts, his opponents, too.

Playmaking
Maye isn't nearly the athlete Jayden Daniels is, but he's far more creative outside the pocket.

While Daniels is perpetually running to scramble, as a straight-line runner with explosive speed, Maye runs to scramble and extend plays. Several of his deepest completions came off extended plays, and Maye will also eat up free rushing yards whenever the middle of the pocket opens, especially on third down. He's a strong, physical runner who also regularly beat defenders to the edge last season.

That playmaking also speaks to sack avoidance, a critical skill for quarterbacks. Maye's pressure-to-sack ratio is higher than ideal, but time and coaching may smooth that out.

Vision
Maye is capable of moving through progressions to find an open receiver. North Carolina's offensive system did not require much of that last season, when he was sometimes sped up when pressured. Maye did, however, flash the potential to diagnose pressure pre and post-snap, another area where he should improve when playing within a system that offers him more built-in answers against the blitz.

Are you pushing hard for Rattler because you believe he will be an NFL starter?  Or that he will have a better or equivalent NFL career to Williams?  Just curious.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was disppointed in Rattler's Combine performance - from this athletic testing to his throwing session.

When I looking into what his athletic testing #'s actually were, I did find this little nuggest on the Draft Buzz website - link:

That got me thinking, I wonder what Purdy and Rattler's RAS scores looked like side-by-side. Well, here they are:



I'm always using the phrase of a QB having at least the "Brock Purdy level of mobility" when referencing the floor-level of athleticism that the next Viking's QB should have to play in the modern NFL, and when looking at their raw RAS athleticism scores side-by-side, you could draw the conclusion that Rattler does, in fact, literally possess a "Brock Purdy level of mobility", or at least he's in the same ballpark. 

Some Combine athletic testing #'s are more important than others for specific positions, and quite honestly, the 40-yd dash times may not be to relevant to the QB position as they don't run 40 yds in straight lines very often. But perhaps the 10/20 yd splits could be somewhat relevant in determing the floor-level of a QB's "quickness" to evade the rush in the pocket and or how quick they can get up to their speed once they decide to tuck the ball and run. And when you look at the 10/20 yd split times, Purdy does have an edge over Rattler, especially with a pretty good 10-yd split of 1.61. 

But did that "mobility" and/or "quickness" show up in the statistical #'s? Possibly the best two statistical categories to look at to determine "mobility" and or "quickness" is sacks/sack rate and rush yards/avg. 

Here are each QB's sacks/sack rate & rushing statistics for their respecitive college careers, and for Purdy we can input his first 2 seasons in the NFL:

Purdy (College, 4 seasons): 71 sacks out of 1,467 attempts (4.84% sack rate); 1,177 rush yds on 365 carries (3.22 avg)
Purdy (NFL 2 seasons):  39 sacks out of 614 attempts (6.35% sack rate); 157 rush yds on 61 carries (2.57 avg)
Rattler (College, 4 seasons): 66 sacks out of 1,313 attempts (5.03% sack rate); 410 rush yds on 297 carries (1.38 avg)

Purdy has been sacked at a higher rate in the NFL than at Iowa St. and his rush yd avg has dipped slightly, but when you compare Rattler's college #'s to Purdy's, you can see the slight "dip" in "mobility" and "quickness" does show up as Rattler has a slightly higher sack rate and less of a rushing avg. Obviously, there are other factors that go into sacks & rush yds (the quality of the OL in front of them being one of other factors), but there is a bit of correlation between Rattler's dip in "quickness" compared to Purdy.
