The odds of that happening (staying put and landing a QB) are less then the odds of a top 5 QB failing. There would have to be so much BS flowing from so many QB needy teams. The Bears IMO are trading pick 9 for future wealth and most likely that team would be jumping Minnesota for a QB if a QB actually fell that far. I just don't see it happening. Then you take pick 23 and the same thing could easily happen and Minnesota has no way to move up and it would be counter productive vs just moving up into the top 5.

Trading three ones isn't that steep when two are in one year. With the cap they have it will be a perfect time to absorb the lose of draft picks. Many think KAM will botch them anyway. If he goes out and gets the guy they all are interested in then its less on him then if he just did so on his own. Reports are everyone is on board with the options. So time will tell. They hit the QB right, this team will move forward quickly. They fail, it will be no worse off, just take a bit longer to get on track.

I just don't value the picks the same from year to year. Some years quantity is king, some quality, so I don't value them the same each draft. I also don't value them in the same regard depending on position. The term overspending is not really how I'd phrase it. I'd call it justifiable by case. Next year I wouldn't be pounding the table the same as this year for a QB. Risk and reward has boundaries and there has to be quantifiable reasoning behind it. This QB class has that. The fact the team has money to sure up positions of need also helps justify the draft capital "lost" I use that term loosely because there's never a guarantee. 10 picks vs 1 the odds should be better, but not always the case. Again quality is sometimes better then quantity.

I think it can work either way so long as they hit on the qb. We already have an offense ready to go, outside of interior oline. The defense needs work but is arguably improved from last year when we were closer to mediocre already. The offense had backups playing half the season but still was 10th in yards per drive and able to move the ball. An elite qb gives us the chance at a top 5 offense with these weapons and bookend tackles, especially if we also add to the interior oline.

A couple later round hits along with the cap for a few impact additions next year has us in position to still have a pretty complete roster around the rookie qb. We aren’t starting from scratch or anything. We have already gone through a competitive rebuild and by next season should be ready to add some final touches. The key is that we need to hit on this qb, no matter where they get picked. If trading up to 3 is the best way to ensure that I think there is a decent argument to pull the trigger.

This is coming from the only person who voted for turner/verse and Penix in that McCarthy thread. I am not saying it’s the only way, just that if koc etc. love a guy and feel confident they will be elite I am fine with that decision too.

Right.

But in the history of the league it’s never been done. Not once.

Trading that many picks to move up that high in the draft has never once gotten a team a QB that won them a SB.

You say this like you know it for fact while the truth is that no team has ever done what you are proposing and won a SB with that QB.
