Luke Braun has a good breakdown as well. He pointed out something that got me thinking. Everyone complains about Maye developing sloppy footwork at NC. But Penix also has bad footwork. Actually worse than Drake because of how his feet end up due to his throwing motion.
But Michael has started for 5 seasons. Why does he still have bad lower body mechanics? Luke wonders if Penix was trying to compensate for the knee issues when he developed the bad habits.
That footwork causes a lot of inaccurate throws. With Maye it's a concentration thing, IMO. He flat out misses easy tosses to RBs out of the backfield or TEs on chip/release plays because he's throwing off his back foot even though he's not being pressured. Gather your feet, use proper technique and complete the gimmy throw.
On the run Drake is awesome. It seems like the harder the throw the better he is. And the easier the worse. Concentration. Kevin can clean that up quick. The Hero Ball stuff can also be a problem but why should Drake get a demerit for it when Caleb Williams threw way more Hero Balls? I like that both of them went big play hunting instead of taking the easy yards because they both knew their Defenses sucked bad. Prefer that to taking the checkdowns.
One thing I'd see in Maye's favor is how bad the team he played on was--maybe that sounds wierd but the muddy, broken down pockets and lack of decent targets had him constantly running for his life, which is a good skill to develop in college. The guys from top schools who stand behind a wall all day waiting for a first read to come open don't have a clue when they get to the NFL and have guys in their face all the time.
But the real issue with Maye is not on the field. It's in Washington and New England where I'd be willing to bet one of those two will snag him, leaving him as not an option for the Vikings. Could we mortgage everything and talk one of those teams off of him? Maybe. But does he look like the next great generational qb talent who's worth that level of investment? Not to me. YMMV.
Age. What 21 year old QB has ever entered the NFL with no 'issues' to fix?
And it's not 'all this stuff'. Not even close. He gets sloppy throwing short, easy passes. But he's not firing 100 mile fastballs on short, easy passes like Penix & McCarthy do. It's bad footwork. He doesn't set his feet and throw the easy stuff with proper technique.
That gets fixed in OTAs by O'Connell drilling using proper technique over and over and over again. To a 21 year old kid with pro athlete bloodlines that stated to get lazy and needs hard coaching...about a really minor issue. These legacy kids typically respond very well to hard coaching because of their parents and uber competitive siblings.
The Hero Ball thing is not a negative. 4th & 8 against the Giants Maye is throwing the ball to a covered Jefferson. Not checking it down to TJ on one of Kevin's worst designed plays to date. The thing needing tweaking is taking the checkdown in the middle of the 3rd Quarter in a close game. I prefer overly aggressive to pre-O'Connel Cousins.
The pocket drifting is the bigger concern. Check out Luke Braun's novel take on why he's not concerned about it now after posting an entire diatribe about it a few months ago.
But in the end you're right. The Commanders are picking him second. And like Dan, I'm not giving up four 1sts for anyone. Like, ever.
That's where I think Gates with DN/Superbowl Nation screwed up. When all the SB Writers got together and did their Mock he was too desperate to trade up. #11, #23 AND the '25 1st to Arizona for #4 to get JJ McCarthy?
f*ck no! I'm a huge McCarthy fan. Great fit. 'It' factor for days. His ceiling is inarguably lower than Maye, just on arm talent alone. Different tiers of prospects. I wouldn't give up 4 for Drake, so no way in hell do I give up 3 for JJ.
