Shall we play a game?
EPA/Attempt, % of throws over MOF (Middle of Field)
.58, 49.1%
.57, 57.9
Minnesota was #2 in number of plays called in the part of the field this stat measures. To hammer the point home, the Vikings with Kevin O'Connell calling the plays dialed up the second most throws in this window in the NFL.
Given that knowledge you want the guy with virtually the same EPA but with almost nine percent more throws attempted, right?
The first line is Michael Penix, Jr. Throwing to 3 Wide Receivers that will be drafted in the first 3 Rounds. Unless McMilan slides to the early 4th where I'd be absolutely stoked for Kwesi to snag him at #108. Throwing behind the 19th ranked Pass Protecting Offensive Line seeing Troy Fauntano get Drafted in the Top 20 overall along with Roger Rosengarten going on Day 3. And a really good RB in Dillon when healthy.
The second stat line? Drake Maye. Throwing to Day 2 WR Tez Walker that he didn't have for a big chunk of the season due to the NCAA. And literally nothing else. Behind a terrible Offensive Line. And nobody that truly replaced Ty Chandler to hand the ball off to. With a terrible Defense.
All while going from an Air Raid Offense his first year starting to whatever the hell NC was trying to run last year.
The guy with all that talent and continuity is 6'2, 216 pounds, is already 23, started games for 5 years in college, has had 4 season ending injuries (2 ACLs, 2 Shoulders) and transferred from a bad program to the Willy Wonka Golden Ticket of Offenses to play for the guy that coached him before.
The other guy is 6'4, 233 pounds, won't turn 23 until August of next year, started for 2 years, has had 0 season ending injuries and stayed at a bad program instead of transferring.
Oh, and the other guy has an entire family full of athletes. He played Basketball and Baseball at a high level in High School. Meaning he wasn't solely focused on becoming an NFL QB as early as most prospects.
I like Penix. I do. Heckuva consolation prize at the back half of the 1st Round, provided he doesn't turn into Sam Bradford. But Maye is clearly got the higher ceiling and frankly, it ain't close.
